About the Durango & Silverton

This is a heritage 3-foot-gauge line with deep mining-era roots, today a major tourist railroad operating from the Durango Depot at 479 Main Avenue. The classic product is the full-day Silverton round trip with a multi-hour layover in town; shorter Cascade Canyon turns and seasonal specials (including photo charters) fill out the calendar. Fall is second only to midsummer for demand, and first-class / open gondola seats go first.

What the Ride Is Like

The full Silverton day is a commitment: canyon walls, river views, aspen stands at elevation, and a mining-town layover for lunch and shops. Open gondolas are spectacular for photography in peak color but cold and exposed. Shorter Cascade trips sample canyon scenery without the full-day clock. Special fall photo events (when scheduled) are separate from regular tourist trains—read the event page carefully.

Peak Color Notes

San Juan / Animas corridor aspens often peak from late September through mid-October, earlier at higher elevations along the climb. The railroad’s Leaf-O-Meter (when updated) is a useful planning tool; one freeze can drop leaves quickly.
