Cumbres & Toltec Fall Colors Train Ride (2026): Aspens, Pass & Tips

Published: August 6, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad straddles the Colorado–New Mexico line between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado—a steam-powered narrow-gauge climb over Cumbres Pass (among the highest operating railroad passes in the U.S.) through aspen forests, Toltec Gorge, and high plains. Fall is peak demand after summer: late September and early October aspens sell parlor and deluxe seats weeks or months ahead.

Cumbres and Toltec steam train through fall aspens on Cumbres Pass

High-country aspens and America’s highest operational railroad pass make autumn the Cumbres & Toltec’s most photogenic season. Marty Bernard photo.

About the Cumbres & Toltec

Jointly owned by Colorado and New Mexico as a historic steam railroad, the C&TS offers full-line and shorter day products with Osier lunch stops on many packages. Motive power is famously steam; classes range from coach through parlor/deluxe. The 2026 schedule is bookable on the railroad’s site; autumn is marketed heavily as a color season rather than a separate named “leaf train,” but demand behaves exactly like one.

Elevation, weather, and thin air matter—layers and sun protection required. Information compiled August 6, 2026.

What the Ride Is Like

This is big mountain narrow-gauge: long grades, aspen tunnels of gold in peak weeks, gorge drama, and steam sound in thin air. Full-line trips are a full-day commitment with a traditional lunch stop at Osier on many tickets. Fall weekends can match July crowds; book early and treat weather as variable (snow is not impossible at pass elevations in late season).

Peak Color Notes

Cumbres corridor aspens often peak from late September into early October. By mid-to-late October many stands are past peak or bare. Book the late-September window first.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Long day for full-line products; shorter trips if stamina is limited
  • Cool mountain temperatures even in sun
  • Steam photography opportunities—respect crew and private property
  • Arrive early for parking at Chama or Antonito

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance online essential for fall parlor/deluxe
  • Pair with: Durango & Silverton; Taos / Santa Fe or Alamosa lodging bases; Colorado aspen highway drives
  • Tickets: cumbrestoltec.com

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book late September–early October for aspen odds
  • Confirm which terminal you board and whether the ticket is one-way with bus return
  • Premium cars sell out first—decide class early
  • Stay off private property and active track for photos
