Experience Overview

The classic trip is the full Durango–Silverton round trip. Trains depart Durango in the morning, climb nearly 3,000 feet in elevation, and arrive in the historic mining town of Silverton for a roughly two-hour layover before returning. Total time away from Durango is about 8.5–9 hours, with approximately 3.5 hours of train time each way.

Steam locomotives operate on most departures during the peak season, with diesel used on some summer schedules. The railroad is a National Historic Landmark and has been carrying passengers through this canyon since the 1880s.

Main Silverton Season (approximate — always confirm): May 2 – November 1, 2026 for the full Silverton route. Multiple morning departures operate during peak summer months.

What to Expect Onboard

The ride is slow (about 18–20 mph) and immersive. You will hear the steam whistle echo off canyon walls, smell the coal smoke, and feel the train working hard on the grades. There is no cell service or Wi-Fi through the canyon.

Concession cars offer snacks and drinks. First-class cars usually include an attendant, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, and light snacks. Dress in layers — mornings can be cool even in summer, and open cars are exposed to sun, wind, and the occasional shower.

Sit toward the rear of the train when possible for better photographs of the locomotive and consist curving through the scenery, and to stay farther from the exhaust.
Book an open gondola if weather looks good and you prioritize views and atmosphere.
Arrive early. Boarding begins well before departure, and the best photo opportunities of the locomotive often happen at the Durango depot.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, layers, and a camera with a polarizing filter. The light in the canyon changes dramatically.
Consider the train-up / bus-back (or reverse) option if a full 9-hour day feels long, especially with children or in cooler weather.
Silverton has limited services — plan lunch accordingly or bring snacks.

Built by the Denver & Rio Grande in the early 1880s to serve the silver mining boom, the line survived the decline of mining by reinventing itself as a tourist railroad.
