Overview
The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad (A&SV) is a heritage railroad located in Abilene, Kansas, designed to offer both a historical journey and a pleasurable experience to its visitors.
Founded in 1993, the railroad operates over approximately 11 miles of track running from Abilene to Enterprise, Kansas, and is managed by the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railway Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the regional railroading heritage.
The railroad tracks used by the railroad originally belonged to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, a critical player in the development and economic growth of the American Midwest in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the A&SV provides a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience rail travel as it once was.
One of the key attractions is its collection of vintage rolling stock, including locomotives and passenger cars reminiscent of a bygone era.
The crown jewel of their collection is Santa Fe 4-6-2 #3415, complted by Baldwin in 1919, an operational steam engine that serves as a highlight for train enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.
This steam locomotive underwent a meticulous restoration process over several years and is now a centerpiece for themed excursions, including their popular summer and fall tours. When the steam locomotive is not in use, the railroad operates with a vintage diesel engine.
The passenger cars, which include open-air and enclosed coaches, provide a charming journey through the scenic Smoky Hill River Valley. This area of Kansas is known for its picturesque landscapes, abundant wildlife, and quaint rural vistas, making the rail journey not only a historical trip but also a scenic one. The ride offers an opportunity to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Kansas countryside, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life.
In addition to regular excursions, railroad hosts a variety of special events and themed rides throughout the year. These events often include themed dinners, educational trips, and holiday specials, such as the popular Cowtown Santa Express mentioned above, which provides a festive experience for families during the Christmas season. Other events might include re-enactments, live music, and other entertainment designed to engage and entertain passengers of all ages.
The railroad serves as an educational resource, promoting the importance of railway history to Kansas and the broader United States. Through their efforts, the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad seeks to preserve the legacy of the region’s railroads while offering a fun and informative experience for visitors. Staffed largely by passionate volunteers, many of whom have a personal or historical connection to the railroad industry, the ASVRR operates as both an educational tool and a social enterprise.
Together, these elements make the railroad a treasured attraction in Kansas, bringing history to life in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for all who visit. It stands as a testament to the impact of railroads in America's heartland and continues to be a vital part of the community's cultural fabric. Whether you're a railway enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a unique outing, the ASVRR offers a timeless experience that transports you back to the golden age of rail travel.
Planning Your Visit
Booking Tickets: Advance booking is highly recommended across all venues, often available online or through local visitor centers.
Check Schedules: Holiday train rides have varying schedules, with some offering additional rides closer to Christmas, so checking in advance is essential.
A Christmas-themed train ride is a remarkable way to embrace the spirit of the season in Kansas. Whether you are seeking interactive experiences with Santa, gourmet dining, or scenic getaways, these train rides offer something special for everyone. All aboard for a memorable Christmas adventure across the beautiful state of Kansas!
