New Hampshire packs an outsized tourist-rail list for a small state: Conway Scenic’s North Conway depot hub (Valley Train and the Mountaineer over Crawford Notch), the Mount Washington Cog Railway’s rack climb, Winnipesaukee lake-country scenery, Hobo Railroad family trips, White Mountain Central’s steam at Clark’s Bears, and the Café Lafayette Dinner Train in the Lincoln / North Woodstock area when it is operating. Conway Scenic itself has not run an evening Dinner Train since 2019. Fall foliage is the high-demand season; summer lake and cog trips fill weekends just as quickly.

State Rail History (Brief)

New Hampshire sits in the cradle of New England railroading. The Boston & Lowell / Nashua & Lowell chain and later the Boston & Maine defined most of the Granite State’s map, with Maine Central and Central Vermont touching the edges. Mountain tourism and industrial branches left corridors that Conway Scenic, Hobo, and lake-country operators reuse today. The Cog (opened 1869) remains a unique rack-railway chapter in U.S. engineering history.

Conway Scenic Railroad

North Conway’s restored depot is the practical capital of New Hampshire tourist railroading. Conway Scenic’s 2026 products are the Valley Train, the Mountaineer over Crawford Notch (not the Notch Train), the Winter Mountaineer, and seasonal specials (foliage, Halloween Express, Santa’s Holiday Express). There is no evening Dinner Train. Steam 7470 is out of service. It is still the easiest one-stop booking for first-time White Mountains visitors.

Mount Washington Cog Railway

From the Marshfield Base Station, the Cog climbs Mount Washington on a rack system dating to 1869—one of the world’s pioneering mountain railways. Summit access depends on weather and season; trains may use historic steam-era presentation and/or modern bio-diesel power depending on the roster and trip. Dress for alpine cold even in summer.

Book via the official Cog site; do not treat it as a lowland scenic loop.

Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad

Lakes-region excursions based around Meredith and Lake Winnipesaukee scenery—strong for families and fall color without the Cog’s altitude. Confirm boarding station and whether your date is a standard scenic or a special (dinner, holiday).

Hobo Railroad

At Lincoln, Hobo Railroad markets family-friendly scenic trips along the Pemigewasset corridor with a classic tourist-railroad atmosphere. Convenient if you are already in the Lincoln/Woodstock lodging cluster.

White Mountain Central Railroad

Steam operations associated with Clark’s Bears (Lincoln) put a short heritage ride inside a larger attraction day. Expect park-admission context rather than a stand-alone Class I–style scenic booking.

Café Lafayette Dinner Train

When operating, Café Lafayette offers a dining-oriented product in the North Woodstock / Lincoln area. Dinner trains change ownership and calendars more often than mountain scenic staples—verify the current season before promising a table to guests.
