Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 18, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy counted 951 diesel locomotives on the parent railroad, each frame once. Electro-Motive built 839 of them, from the shovel-nose Zephyr power cars of 1934 to SD45s delivered in January 1969. General Electric, Alco, and Baldwin built the other 112. The Colorado & Southern added 72 new locomotives through the merger, and the Fort Worth & Denver added 36. Those are three lists. A unit transferred from the parent, and a unit later renumbered, is the same locomotive. In 1963 the property still held 691 diesels. That figure is a census of one year. The company story, from the Aurora Branch charter of February 12, 1849, to Burlington Northern at 12:01 a.m. on March 2, 1970, is the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy page. Steam built or rebuilt since 1900 is the steam roster.

Zephyrs and E units

The order for the first train went to the Budd Company on June 17, 1933. Power car 9900, Electro-Motive serial 509, was completed on April 9, 1934. On May 26, 1934, the Dawn-to-Dusk dash ran from Denver to Chicago, 1,015.4 miles in 13 hours 5 minutes. Revenue service began November 11, 1934, and the power car was retired on March 20, 1960. Ten more shovel-nose power cars followed through Silver Charger, 9908, in April 1939. The eleven power cars are in the table. The train names, from the Pioneer Zephyr through the California Zephyr and the Denver Zephyr, are on the company page.

The stainless E5s replaced the articulated trainsets on the long runs. Nine E5A cabs were built for the Burlington, 9909 through 9915, plus three E5B boosters, 9910B–9912B. The printed serial span for cabs 9910A–9912A does not cover three units, so that cell is blank. The booster row is printed 971–973. The Fort Worth & Denver roster prints serial 968 for 9911A, later its 9982A. E5A 9909, 9913, and 9914A later went to the Colorado & Southern as 9953, 9954A, and 9955A. They stay on the parent rows.

E7A deliveries ran from November 1945 through March 1949, 39 new cabs. The first 9925 was later numbered 9949, which is a different frame from E8A 9949A. E8As are 38 new cabs, including 9970–9977 of 1953, and the series reaches 9937B, built in December 1949 beside an E7 numbered 9937A. E9As are 16, six in June 1954 and ten at the end of 1955 and the start of 1956. E9A 9985-A and GP30 974 stood in the 1964 Chicago-line lineup with Silver Charger.

Freight cabs

The FT was the freight diesel. Electro-Motive delivered 32 cabs and 32 boosters between January and September 1944, numbers 100 through 115, each set lettered A through D. The first five cab pairs and the first five booster pairs were later renumbered 150C–159C and 150B–159B. Those are the same frames. FT 115-A, serials 2725–2726 on that last pair, is the Lincoln engine above.

Ten F2A cabs arrived in 1946 and took the 150A–154A and 155C–159C numbers. Construction number 3021 is printed in both of those lists. The two rows are given as printed. F3s then filled out the freight pools and a small passenger pool, 9960–9962, in 1947, 1948, and January 1949. Sets 119A–D later became Colorado & Southern 703A–D and stay on the parent rows. F3As 137A and 137D through 138A and 138D were later 163C–166C.

The F7s are a short list, four cabs in 163A–166A and six more in 167A–169A and 167C–169C, plus three boosters, all in May 1950. The 168 set is the one at La Crosse. 168-B is an F7B.

Road switchers

Geeps replaced the Mikados on the branches and the locals. GP7s 200–267 are 68 engines, serials 13169–13183 on the first fifteen and then four later blocks through December 1953. The year is not printed for 200–214. GP9s 270–289 followed in June 1954. The turbocharged road switchers came in a rush: 36 GP20s in 1961, 38 GP30s in 1962 and 1963, 22 GP35s in 1963 and 1964, and 40 GP40s, twenty in December 1966 and twenty in February 1968.

Six-axle Electro-Motive power began with 37 SD7s, twelve numbered 400–411 in 1952 and twenty-five numbered 300–324 in 1953. SD9s then came in three blocks, 325–374 and 430–459, eighty engines, from 1954 to 1957. Sixteen SD24s, 500–515, arrived in May and June 1959. Fifteen SD45s, 516–530, closed the parent Electro-Motive road list in January 1969.

General Electric’s road switchers are the other half of the late freight fleet. Six U25Bs, 100–105, came in September 1964, the third use of the 100 series. Twenty U28Bs followed in the 106, 111, and 140 series, and the 140s were later rebuilt to 3,000 horsepower. Five U30Bs, 150–154, are dated October 1966, the second use of the 150 series. Twelve U25Cs, 550–561, came in August and September 1965. The printed serial span for that row does not match twelve units, so the cell is blank. Sixteen U28Cs, 562–577, and nine U23Cs, 460–468, of April 1969, finish the parent General Electric list. The U23Cs and the SD45s were the last new road freight units lettered for the Burlington.

Yard switchers

Yard dieselization started earlier than the road freight. Six prewar SW switchers, 9130–9135, arrived in 1937 and were traded in on SW1000s in 1966. Eighteen SW1s followed in 1939–1941. One of them, 9146, later became Colorado & Southern 155 and then Fort Worth & Denver 601, and it is counted here. Two NW1s, 9200 and 9201, were traded in during September 1965. NW2s, SW7s, SW9s, SW1200s, and twelve SW1000s carry the yard list through May 1966. The printed serial spans for SW1200s 9281–9292 and SW1000s 9310–9321 do not match the twelve units in each row, so those cells are blank. SW9 9270 had been an Electro-Motive demonstrator with the same number.

The cow-and-calf TR2s are 28 units, 14 sets, 9400 through 9413, built from a pair of demonstrators in 1947 through November 1949. The calf of the demonstrator pair was later rebuilt as an NW2. Alco’s contribution was nine S-2s, 9300–9308, in 1943 and 1944. Baldwin’s was thirty VO-1000s, 9350–9379, built in November and December 1943 and November and December 1944.

General Electric 44-tonner 9103, serial 12908, September 1940, was the first of that model built. Four more, 9104–9107, followed in February and March 1941, and 9107 was later 8903. Nine small industrial locomotives never joined the road fleet: Plymouth 1 and 2, Mack 100, Whitcomb 101, Porter 111, Whitcomb 112, and Midwest 65-ton 9121–9123. Several of those were later numbered in the 8900s and 9100s. They are the same machines, and they are outside the 951.

Subsidiaries

The Colorado & Southern and the Fort Worth & Denver bought their own locomotives, and those lists stop at the merger. A parent engine later lettered for either subsidiary stays in the parent table. Colorado & Southern new power through 1968 is the switchers 150–154 and 156–160, F7s 700–702, SD7s 810–819, SD9s 820–842, SD40s 875–887, and U30Cs 890–893, 72 frames. The SD9 rows are 23 engines. Number 155 was the parent SW1. SD45s of 1971 and the SD40-2s from 1972 were Burlington Northern deliveries. The printed serial span for SD40s 875–887 does not match thirteen units, so that cell is blank.

Fort Worth & Denver new power is 36 frames: switchers 602–610, the E5 pair 9980, F7s 750–752, E8As 9981A and 9981B, and SD7s 850–860. The railroad’s 601 was the parent SW1 9146. The 9982 pair was the parent E5 9911. The GP38-2s of June 1980 came after the merger.
