Steam Railroading Institute Dining (2026): Owosso Dates & What to Expect

Owosso’s Steam Railroading Institute plates dinner in vintage dining cars on select evenings, not as a weekly restaurant train. As of this revision the institute has not posted a 2026 public dinner calendar. The recent example is Up In Smoke on August 2, 2025: barbecue, bourbon tasting, 21+, board 5:30 p.m., depart 6:00 p.m., return about 9:00 p.m. Check michigansteamtrain.com before you plan a 2026 dinner around 1225. The North Pole Express is a Christmas train, not this page.

About the Steam Railroading Institute

SRI sits in the old Ann Arbor steam shops at 405 S. Washington Street, Owosso, Michigan. The flagship engine is Pere Marquette 2-8-4 #1225 (Lima 1941). The institute is open to visitors on select days April–September; shops work through the winter for the holiday season. Chicago & North Western 175 is a second steam restoration. This page is the occasional dining car, not the locomotive encyclopedia.

What the evening is like (when it runs)

SRI’s FAQ describes historic dining cars seating about 40 in booths. Up In Smoke paired barbecue with a bourbon tasting and offered cigars only in a designated open-air car; passenger cars were non-smoking. That is a special-event atmosphere, not a nightly rolling restaurant. Adrian & Blissfield’s Old Road Dinner Train has not run since 2020; do not treat it as a current Michigan dinner host.

The North Pole Express (Owosso–Ashley, late November–December) is the holiday family train. It is not a licensed Polar Express ride and it is not the dinner product. Whiskey-tasting coverage of Up In Smoke, when it exists, stays on the Michigan whiskey leaf.
