The diesel locomotives below are the Missouri Pacific's all time roster. While the railroad operated models from every builder except Fairbanks-Morse, it relied increasingly on EMD products in later years following a rather sizeable first-generation Alco fleet that ranged from PAs to RS3s. It also operated several Baldwin switchers.
Missouri Pacific SD40-2 3117 leads a long freight through western Kansas in the winter of 1974. No. 3117 carries a number outside the as-built spans in the table. American-Rails.com collection.

The International-Great Northern counted 88 diesel locomotives when it ceased to be a separate company on March 1, 1956. Units that already carry Missouri Pacific numbers in the tables below are the same frames. The Chicago & Eastern Illinois diesel roster is that railroad’s own list. After the merger, Missouri Pacific GP15-1s 1570–1574 and SD40-2s 3150–3163 were sublettered Chicago & Eastern Illinois. Those numbers sit inside the spans here and are counted once.
A few road numbers were used more than once. F7A 577 and GP38 577 are two locomotives that shared a number, years apart. Some RS3s were later re-engined with Electro-Motive prime movers. The railroad called the result a “GP12.” No. 1080, photographed at Sedalia in June 1972, is one of them, and the frame is already inside the RS3 count. The Alco PA cabs are 8 PA-1s and 28 PA-2s, with no boosters. Nos. 8011 and 8012 were delivered to the International-Great Northern and sit in 8009–8036.
The last new Alcos were RS11s 4601–4612, delivered in October and November 1959. The passenger cabs are the PA-1s and PA-2s. FA-2s 1374 and 1386, photographed after trade-in at McCook, Illinois, in June 1962, carried later numbers. The trucks and traction motors from those two units went into new GP18s.

The road units are the Babyface DR-4-4-1500 cabs and boosters, the DRS-4-4-1500 road switchers, and the AS16s. The switchers run from the VO-660 through the S12. Inside S12s 9200–9239, Nos. 9220–9226 and 9230–9232 are the International-Great Northern units of that model, the same frames.

Switchers arrived in 1937. The early Electro-Motive units are NC 4100–4101 and SC 9000–9003, both of 1937, and NW4 4102–4103 of 1938. E3A 7001 came in 1939. The FT freight units, 501–512 and the matching boosters, came in 1943–1945. The later road fleet is dominated by GP7s, GP9s, GP15s, GP38-2s, and the six-axle SD40 and SD40-2. GP35s on this page are 615–639, the series that includes 620 at Dupo in the company-page photograph. SD40-2s 3150–3163, inside 3139–3321, are the units sublettered Chicago & Eastern Illinois. The specification page for the model is the SD40 and SD40-2 article.
