Nestled in the picturesque town of Medina, New York, the Medina Railroad Museum is a captivating destination that offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the rich history and intricate world of railroads.

Established in the historic New York Central Freight Depot, the museum is one of the largest and most comprehensive railroad and toy train museums in the United States.

Whether you’re a train enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique family outing, the Medina Railroad Museum promises a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.

A Historical Gem

The Medina Railroad Museum is housed in a splendid wood-framed structure built in 1905. This depot served the bustling New York Central system, a key player in the American railroad industry during the early 20th century.

With its expansive 14,000-square-foot space, the museum retains much of its original architectural charm, evoking the golden age of rail travel.

The museum was founded in 1991 by Martin Phelps, a passionate rail historian and collector. Martin envisioned a space where visitors could appreciate and learn about the pivotal role railroads played in shaping America.

The result of his vision is a museum that not only preserves and displays historic artifacts but also offers interactive exhibits and educational programs to engage and inspire its guests.

Exploring the Exhibits

Model Train Layout

One of the highlights of the Medina Railroad Museum is its gargantuan model train layout, which is among the largest in the country. Spanning an impressive 204 feet in length and 14 feet in width, this intricately crafted display is a marvel to behold.

The layout features over 600 feet of track and meticulously reconstructed scenes that capture the essence of American life in the mid-20th century.

Visitors will find tiny towns, mountainous terrain, bustling cityscapes, and tranquil rural landscapes, all populated by miniature figures and adorned with period-specific details.

The model train layout is a living exhibit, constantly being updated and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers. This dynamic aspect ensures that repeat visitors always encounter something new and delightful.

Historic Artifacts

Beyond the model trains, the museum boasts an extensive collection of railroad artifacts that tell the story of America’s railroading past. These artifacts include vintage locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, and various pieces of railroad equipment.

Each item in the collection offers a tangible connection to the history and evolution of rail travel.  Perhaps most notable is the museum's two New York Central E8As, #4080 and #4068 (currently inoperable).

The museum’s displays feature a wide range of artifacts, from conductor uniforms and antique tickets to railway tools and signaling devices. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to explore the inner workings of various railroad technologies, offering an educational and hands-on experience.

Special Exhibits

The Medina Railroad Museum periodically hosts special exhibits that delve into specific aspects of railroad history.

These exhibits often focus on themes such as the development of railroads in the United States, the impact of railroads on community development, and the technological advancements that have shaped the industry.

Keep an eye on the museum’s event calendar for information about upcoming special exhibits.

Ride the Rails: Excursion Trains

An integral part of the Medina Railroad Museum experience is the opportunity to ride aboard one of their excursion trains. These scenic train journeys offer a nostalgic experience as passengers travel along the historic tracks that once formed part of the New York Central network.

Regular Excursions

The museum offers regular train excursions that take passengers on a leisurely journey through the picturesque landscapes of Orleans County. These trips typically last about 2 hours and provide a relaxing and enjoyable way to experience the beauty of western New York.

Themed Rides

In addition to regular excursions, the Medina Railroad Museum hosts a variety of themed train rides throughout the year. These events are especially popular with families and often sell out quickly, so be sure to book your tickets in advance. Some of the themed rides include:

- **Easter Bunny Train Ride:** Celebrate spring with a delightful train ride featuring a visit from the Easter Bunny, who hands out treats to all the children aboard.

- **Fall Foliage Train Ride:** Witness the stunning autumn colors as the train winds its way through the scenic countryside.

- **Polar Express Train Ride:** Inspired by the beloved holiday story, this magical excursion during the Christmas season brings the enchanting tale of the Polar Express to life.

- **Halloween Train Ride:** A spooky adventure perfect for families, featuring ghost stories and festive decorations.

Caboose Rentals

For a truly unique experience, consider renting a private caboose for your group. The museum offers caboose rentals for private parties, providing a memorable way to celebrate special occasions while riding the rails.

Educational Programs and Events

One of the Medina Railroad Museum’s core missions is to educate visitors about the importance of railroads in American history. To this end, the museum offers a variety of educational programs for school groups, scouts, and community organizations.
