Rhode Island’s railroad museum is a room in a station that still handles Amtrak trains. The Friends of the Kingston Railroad Station keep the Rhode Island Railroad Museum in the 1875 New York, Providence & Boston depot at West Kingston. The Boston & Providence opened through the state on July 28, 1835, and the New Haven later held the Shore Line and the branches. The public trains at Newport are rides, and their calendar is on the Rhode Island scenic-train guide.

The Boston & Providence was chartered on June 21, 1831, and opened between Boston and Providence on July 28, 1835, after the Canton Viaduct. The Old Colony leased it in the spring of 1888, and the New Haven leased the Old Colony on March 1, 1893. The New York, Providence & Boston was formed in 1833. Its line from Stonington, Connecticut, to Providence opened in November 1837 and met the Boston & Providence at Providence. Mileage peaked at 211 in 1920. The 2017 figure is 58. The state account is the Rhode Island railroads page.
The Narragansett Pier Railroad ran about eight miles from West Kingston to the pier. It served the Hazard family mills at Peace Dale and Wakefield, carried passengers to the shore, and stayed in service from 1876 until 1981. A bike path now follows that right-of-way from the Kingston station toward the sea. The Wood River Branch was launched in 1872, completed in 1874, taken into the New Haven in 1892, and abandoned on August 8, 1947.
Freight on the remaining lines is the Providence & Worcester, plus Seaview at the former Navy yard in North Kingstown. Passengers are Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor trains at Providence, Kingston, and Westerly, and MBTA commuter trains into Providence. Neighbors with their own museum pages are Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Boston & Maine is the other New England system in that story.
The station at 1 Railroad Avenue in West Kingston is a wood-frame depot the New York, Providence & Boston erected in 1875. An earlier stop stood a few hundred feet away, where the tracks crossed Waites Corner Road. Landowners there would not sell adjoining ground, and in 1874 the railroad received permission to move the station to the present site. Within a year of the new building’s opening, it was the inland end of the Narragansett Pier Railroad.
The Friends of the Kingston Railroad Station formed in 1973. Barbara Dirlam, the Rev. John Hall, and Professor Frank Heppner of the University of Rhode Island led the group. More than 150 townspeople scraped and painted the depot. Amtrak, which took the property as that work was under way, supplied paint and a station sign. The Friends later disbanded. A fire in December 1988 damaged the roof, and the group was reconstituted. The state took title to the station and the adjoining land in the early 1990s. Ahead of high-speed service the building was moved back 15 feet from the tracks and raised 3 feet. The rehabilitation was celebrated in 1998.
High-level platforms and a third track were finished in October 2017. The station building and the parking are the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s. The platform and the track are Amtrak’s. The Northeast Regional still stops. Great American Stations credits the Friends with the Rhode Island Railroad Museum inside the depot, a room of regional railroad exhibits, and with Operation Lifesaver visits and a Young Railroaders club. Confirm what is on view before you plan the stop around those exhibits. The hours of the waiting room are Amtrak’s. The museum’s own days follow the Friends.
