Iron Mountain Railway's Murder Mystery Dinner Trains
Published: April 11, 2026

The St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway—often simply called the “Iron Mountain Railway”—is one of Missouri’s most unique heritage railroads. Located in Jackson, just south of St. Louis, this volunteer-run attraction blends living history with themed entertainment, including one of its most popular offerings: the Murder Mystery Dinner Train.
About The Railroad
The modern tourist line draws its name and inspiration from the historic St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway, a major Midwestern railroad that once connected St. Louis with the mineral-rich regions of southeastern Missouri and beyond. Originally chartered in the 1850s, the line was built to haul iron ore from deposits around Iron Mountain near Ironton. It expanded rapidly and became an important regional carrier before ultimately being absorbed into the Missouri Pacific system in 1917.
Today’s heritage operation preserves this legacy in a far more intimate setting. The current Iron Mountain Railway operates roughly 4–6 miles of former Missouri Pacific trackage near Jackson, offering short excursion rides through the rolling countryside of Cape Girardeau County.
What makes this railroad particularly special is its grassroots nature. It is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, with every crew member—from conductors to onboard entertainers—donating their time. This gives the railroad a distinctly community-focused atmosphere that differs from larger, commercial tourist railroads.
The equipment itself adds to the experience. Passengers ride in historic passenger cars dating to the 1920s, effectively turning each trip into a “rolling museum.” These cars retain much of their original character—open windows, vintage interiors, and a slower-paced ride that evokes early 20th-century rail travel.
Since its founding, the railway has expanded far beyond simple excursions. It now offers a wide range of themed events throughout the year, including:
-
Old West-style train robberies (the “James Gang”)
-
Holiday-themed Santa Express trains
-
Family rides like Dinosaur and Ice Cream trains
-
Dinner trains and special evening events
These themed experiences have helped the railroad attract over 11,000 visitors annually, with the holiday season being particularly popular.
Among all its offerings, the Murder Mystery Dinner Train stands out as one of the most immersive and entertaining experiences, combining live theater, dining, and rail travel into a single event.
The Murder Mystery Dinner Train Experience
The Murder Mystery Train is designed as an interactive theatrical experience on rails. Rather than simply watching a performance, passengers become part of the story.
What to Expect
-
Live actors onboard present a themed mystery scenario
-
Passengers interact, gather clues, and attempt to solve the crime
-
Each event typically features a different storyline, encouraging repeat visits
-
The train ride lasts roughly 2 hours, including dining and entertainment
Dining & Extras
-
These are evening-only events, typically geared toward adults
-
Most include wine tasting prior to departure
-
Dinner is served onboard or as part of the experience (depending on theme)
Atmosphere
Because the train uses vintage rolling stock, the setting feels authentic—dim lighting, period interiors, and the rhythmic motion of the train all enhance the suspense and immersion.
