The Seaboard Air Line owned 734 diesel locomotives. One hundred forty-seven were cab units, from the E4s of 1938 through a single E9 in 1963, including fourteen Baldwin Centipedes. Four hundred ninety-two were road locomotives, from the Alco road switchers and the first GP7s to GP40s delivered in January and February 1967. Ninety-five were yard switchers. The E4s took the Florida passenger trains in 1938. SW1 No. 1200, an Electro-Motive demonstrator, arrived in March 1939.
Baldwin DR-6-4-1500 No. 2702 at Tampa, Florida, on February 21, 1962. Warren Calloway collection. Nos. 2700–2702 are the railroad’s three Baby Face units, Baldwin 73396–73398.

Electro-Motive built the passenger cabs. The first fourteen E4As and five E4Bs arrived in 1938 and 1939 and took the Florida trains, including the Silver Meteor of 1939. No. 3013 was a demonstrator. Nos. 3003 and 3013 were wrecked at Hypoluxo, Florida, on February 19, 1942, and scrapped. No. 3012 was wrecked at Ryan, Virginia, on May 28, 1942, and returned to service. E7s carried the trains through the late 1940s. E8s followed in 1950 and 1952, and E9A No. 3060, serial 28524, was built in December 1963. Several of the E8s and that E9 went to Amtrak.
Freight cabs began with the FT, twenty-two A units and twenty-two B units delivered from June 1942 through 1944. Eleven F3As followed in March 1948. Alco’s contribution was three FA1s and three FB1s, also in 1948. Baldwin’s three Baby Face units, model DR-6-4-1500, are 2700–2702. No. 2702 is the Tampa photograph above.
The fourteen Centipedes are model DR-12-8-1500/2, also written DR-12-8-3000. No. 4500 was completed on December 3, 1945, construction number 71579, the rebuilt 1943 demonstrator 6000, and it entered Jacksonville–St. Petersburg service on December 13, 1945. The thirteen production units were completed from March 15, 1947, to January 4, 1948. Construction numbers and dates below follow the Centipede page. The specification sheet stays there.

Alco’s six-motor road switchers began with RSC2s in October 1947 and ran through RSC3s in 1951. The four-motor RS2s and RS3s followed from December 1949, including five units inherited from the Macon, Dublin & Savannah and numbered 1685–1691. Ten RS11s arrived in June 1960. Twenty-six C420s, numbers 110–135, were built from May through August 1965 on order 3418. No. 126 was wrecked. The others were sold to the Louisville & Nashville as 1351–1375.
Electro-Motive’s hood fleet is the largest block on the railroad: 123 GP7s, numbered 1700–1822, built from April 1950 through September 1952, and 56 GP9s. Ten GP18s came in 1960. Thirty-five GP30s include No. 534, serial 27462, built in March 1962 as EMD demonstrator 5639 and numbered at the end of the series. Ten GP35s came in June 1965. Fifty-one GP40s came in two groups, 600–629 in May 1966 and 630–650 in January and February 1967. Twenty SDP35s, 1100–1119, were built from July through November 1964 for the passenger and mail trains that still needed steam generators. Fifteen General Electric U30Bs, 800–814, were built in December 1966 and January 1967. The GP40s of early 1967 are the last new locomotives in this list. The merger into the Seaboard Coast Line took effect on July 1, 1967.

The yard fleet mixes all three builders. SW1 No. 1200, serial 802, was built in March 1939 as an Electro-Motive demonstrator. Alco S1 No. 1201 followed in January 1941. Baldwin VO-1000s and Alco S2s arrived during the war, and seven NW2s came in March 1942. After the war Baldwin’s DS-4-4-1000, thirty-five units in the 1400s, became the standard heavy switcher, with S12s and road-switcher-framed RS12s added in 1952 and 1953. The last new yard engines were ten Alco S4s in April 1953, numbers 1482–1491. VO-1000 No. 1492, built in December 1941, came from the Macon, Dublin & Savannah as that road’s No. 1000.
