Amtrak’s Silver Star – Complete Scenic Route Guide 2026

Published: July 28, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Silver Star is Amtrak’s New York–to–Miami Silver Service train that threads the Northeast Corridor, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Florida peninsula on a classic East Coast long-distance schedule. For riders comparing Florida options, it sits alongside the Silver Meteor and Palmetto as a core Northeast–Florida choice.

This 2026 guide covers the route, how it differs from the Meteor, practical notes, and tips for Florida-bound long-distance travel. Note: Consist details and schedule times can change—confirm equipment and live times on Amtrak.com before you book nonrefundable plans.

Route Snapshot

  • Endpoints: New York (Penn Station) and Miami (with major Florida intermediate markets)
  • Character: Silver Service long-distance train; NEC + Southeast + Florida
  • Equipment (typical): Single-level eastern long-distance cars (Viewliner sleepers when assigned)—confirm live consist
  • Best for: Northeast–Florida city pairs, snowbirds, and riders comparing Meteor vs. Star timings

Best Scenic Stretches

  • Northeast Corridor urban and coastal running north of Washington
  • Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas mainland scenery by day or dusk depending on schedule
  • Florida peninsula running with subtropical landscape and city approaches
  • Sunrise/sunset photography on the long Florida segment when timing aligns
  • Less mountain scenic than western trains—more coastal-plain and corridor interest

Classes of Service (2026)

  • Coach — Core long-distance coach seating
  • Business class — When offered on segments/consist
  • Sleeper (Viewliner) — Private rooms on the overnight Florida run when assigned
  • Dining / cafe — Confirm current Silver Service food policy for your date

2026 Practical Information

  • Peak demand: Winter Florida season, holidays, spring break-adjacent weekends
  • Compare with: Silver Meteor (often preferred for pure Miami timing) and Palmetto (daylight to Savannah)
  • Connections: Northeast Regional / Acela network at New York and Washington
  • Disruption note: Freight host railroads and NEC maintenance can affect timing—build buffer

Tips for the Best Trip

  • Compare Star vs. Meteor schedules side-by-side for your city pair before buying.
  • Winter Florida peak: book sleepers early.
  • See Silver Meteor 2026 guide and Palmetto 2026 guide.
  • For Carolinas daylight corridor riding, also see Carolinian and Piedmont.
  • Travel light; single-level eastern cars have different luggage dynamics than Superliners.
  • Track maintenance season can mean bus bridges—read service alerts.

A Brief History

The Silver Star name descends from Seaboard Air Line’s Florida service tradition, carried into the Amtrak era as part of the Northeast–Florida market that remains one of the national network’s busiest long-distance corridors. Today’s train is less about mountain vistas and more about reliable corridor-to-Florida connectivity with classic Silver Service branding.
