Utah’s railroad museum is the station where the transcontinental lines met the valley. Ogden Union Station, finished in 1924 after the 1889 depot burned, has been the Utah State Railroad Museum since February 26, 1988. Union Pacific 4-8-4 No. 833 and gas-turbine No. 26 stand with the outdoor collection. At Promontory, Golden Spike National Historical Park keeps replicas of the Jupiter and No. 119 and runs them as a demonstration. Helper’s museum is the old hotel on Main Street, in the town named for the engines that shoved coal trains toward Soldier Summit. The bookable ride is the Heber Valley Railroad.
The replicas of Union Pacific 119 and Central Pacific 60, Jupiter, nose to nose at Promontory, circa 1982. The original Jupiter was Schenectady, 1868. American-Rails.com collection.
Heber’s calendar, and the last day the Promontory locomotives are scheduled, are on the Utah scenic-train guide. American-Rails does not sell tickets. Confirm the doors before you drive.

The Central Pacific and the Union Pacific met at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869. Union Pacific built the last 70 miles from the Wyoming line. The Central Pacific built 159 miles east from Nevada. The full story is the transcontinental railroad page. The Utah Central opened from Ogden to Salt Lake City in January 1870, and the Utah Southern started south from Salt Lake City in May 1871. The Denver & Rio Grande Western’s narrow gauge reached Salt Lake City in March 1883 and Ogden about two months later. The Rio Grande Western standard-gauged the route after the 1889 reorganization. The Southern Pacific opened the Lucin Cutoff across Great Salt Lake in 1903, and the old Promontory line was abandoned in 1904. The Los Angeles & Salt Lake was completed to Los Angeles in 1905. The Western Pacific reached Oakland from Salt Lake City in 1909.
The state’s statistics box gives a peak of 2,161 miles and a 2020 figure of 1,385. Union Pacific holds most of what remains. BNSF reaches Salt Lake City from the north, and the Utah Railway still moves coal from its old country near Martin. Amtrak’s California Zephyr stops at Green River, Helper, Provo, and Salt Lake City. FrontRunner, between Provo and Ogden, is commuter rail. The state account is the Utah railroads page. Neighbors with their own museum pages are Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona.
Ogden Union Station is at 2501 Wall Avenue. The building on the site today was completed in 1924, in the Spanish Colonial Revival, by the Los Angeles architects John and Donald Parkinson, and it was dedicated on November 22, 1924. It stands on the foundation of the 1889 station, which burned in 1923. The National Register listing is April 11, 1971. The platforms are part of the museum grounds. The city has held the station as a museum since 1978, the project of historian Elizabeth “Teddy” Griffith, with a dedication on October 21 of that year. On February 26, 1988, Governor Norman Bangerter signed the bill that made Union Station the Utah State Railroad Museum. The Spencer S. and Hope F. Eccles Rail Center was dedicated the next year as the outdoor addition. The same building houses the Browning firearms museum, the Browning-Kimball car museum, and the Utah Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.
Union Pacific No. 833 is an Alco 4-8-4 of October 1939, construction number 69174. It came to Ogden from Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City on February 22, 1999. Gas-turbine No. 26, an Alco-GE locomotive of 1961 rated at 8,500 horsepower, was retired in 1970 and given to the museum. The turbine story is on the Union Pacific gas-turbine page. A section of the redwood Lucin Cutoff trestle stands at the entrance to the railroad exhibits. Rio Grande narrow-gauge No. 223, a Grant 2-8-0 of 1881, was announced on October 28, 2025, as bound for the Colorado Railroad Museum for restoration. Hours are the city’s to post.
Golden Spike National Historical Park is the meeting place. The locomotives steamed there for visitors are replicas of the Central Pacific’s Jupiter and Union Pacific No. 119. The park runs them as a demonstration at the monument. Two park pages from the spring of 2026 do not agree on the last October day or on the afternoon clock. Read the park’s own page before you drive, and read the scenic guide for how that demonstration differs from a ticket to another town.
The Western Mining and Railroad Museum is at 294 South Main Street, in the Old Helper Hotel of 1913. A volunteer museum of coal and the railroad has occupied the hotel since 1964. Helper was a Denver & Rio Grande Western division point. Westbound coal trains took extra locomotives here for the climb to Soldier Summit, and the town’s name is that job. The California Zephyr still stops in Helper. The museum’s days are its own.
The Heber Valley Railroad boards at 450 South 600 West in Heber City. The trip the railroad posts is the Deer Creek Express, a round trip of about 90 minutes along the Wasatch Back and Deer Creek Reservoir. Older descriptions of the railroad still talk about a Provo Canyon ride to Vivian Park. Read the ticket you buy. The October listings leave the locomotive unnamed. Halloween trains, pumpkin trains, and the North Pole season stay on the scenic guide.
Confirm hours and which locomotive is on the property before you travel.
