The locomotive joins a growing roster of special and heritage-painted units across the agency’s fleet, but stands apart as a forward-looking tribute to a national milestone rather than a retrospective nod to a predecessor railroad.

A Patriotic Tribute: The “America 250” Livery

NJ Transit formally introduced No. 4526’s patriotic scheme via social media in December 2025, describing it as a tribute to the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.

The design features:

A striking red, white, and blue color palette
Prominent patriotic graphics symbolizing American independence
Commemorative lettering referencing the 250th anniversary of the United States
A modern, high-visibility wrap style similar to other NJ Transit special units

This locomotive continues a broader tradition among North American railroads of applying commemorative liveries for major national or cultural events. However, unlike NJ Transit’s earlier heritage fleet—which honored predecessor railroads such as the Pennsylvania Railroad or Erie Lackawanna—No. 4526 represents a national theme, emphasizing unity and celebration rather than corporate lineage.

Within NJ Transit’s internal classification of special units, 4526 is part of a small but growing group of “special interest” locomotives, which have included themes such as military service, diversity initiatives, and historic anniversaries.

The ALP-45DP

The significance of No. 4526 extends beyond its livery—it is part of one of the most innovative locomotive classes in North American commuter railroading: the Bombardier (now Alstom) ALP-45DP.

Introduced in the early 2010s, the ALP-45DP was designed to solve a long-standing operational challenge: how to provide a “one-seat ride” from non-electrified lines into electrified territory such as New York Penn Station.

Dual-Mode Capability

The ALP-45DP is a dual-mode (electro-diesel) locomotive, meaning it can operate using:

Electric power via overhead catenary (12 kV AC for NJ Transit)
Diesel power using onboard engines

This flexibility allows trains to:

Operate in diesel mode on outlying branches
Transition to electric mode for tunnels and dense urban corridors
Avoid locomotive changes mid-journey

The class entered service with NJ Transit beginning in 2011–2012 and quickly became a backbone of operations across multiple lines.
