The Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) operated some of the most powerful steam locomotives ever built in the United States. Its fleet of 18 massive 2-8-8-4 “Yellowstone” articulated steam engines, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1941 and 1943, represented the pinnacle of steam technology for heavy freight service on the iron ranges of northern Minnesota. These giants hauled enormous trains of iron ore from the mines to the ore docks on Lake Superior, playing a vital role in America’s industrial might—especially during World War II.
The DM&IR’s Yellowstones were not the first of their type—the wheel arrangement originated with the Northern Pacific Railway in the late 1920s—but they were the most powerful and among the heaviest examples ever constructed. They stood alongside Union Pacific’s famous 4-8-8-4 Big Boys as icons of late-era American steam power, yet they excelled in their specific niche: moving dense, heavy ore over relatively short but demanding routes in harsh northern climates.

Its primary mission was transporting millions of tons of iron ore annually from open-pit mines to the massive ore docks at Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. Iron ore is extremely dense, so trains required locomotives with exceptional tractive effort and adhesion rather than high speed.
By the late 1930s, the DM&IR needed more powerful motive power to handle longer, heavier trains efficiently. Earlier locomotives, including Mallet articulated types, were reaching their limits. The railroad turned to Baldwin Locomotive Works for a new design optimized for its traffic.
Baldwin based the new engines on ten 2-8-8-2 articulated locomotives it had built for the Western Pacific Railroad in the 1930s. However, the DM&IR required a larger coal-burning firebox to support sustained high power output and an all-weather cab suitable for Minnesota’s brutal winters. These needs led to the addition of a four-wheel trailing truck, creating the 2-8-8-4 wheel arrangement known as the Yellowstone type.
The resulting locomotives featured a high-capacity “centipede” or pedestal tender and roller bearings on all axles—advanced features for the era. Some carried an Elesco feedwater heater (cylindrical unit ahead of the stack), while others had a Worthington unit with its characteristic rectangular box.
Baldwin delivered the first eight locomotives (Class M-3, road numbers 220–227) in 1941. They performed so well that the DM&IR ordered ten more (Class M-4, road numbers 228–237) for delivery in 1943. The War Production Board approved the second order despite wartime restrictions on new steam locomotive construction.
The two classes were very similar, with minor variations in feedwater heater equipment and possibly other details. All 18 shared the same core dimensions and performance characteristics. They were among the largest steam locomotives built, rivaling the Big Boys in size and power.

These figures made the Missabe's Yellowstones exceptionally strong pullers. Their high adhesive weight and factor of adhesion of 4.00 meant they were less prone to wheel slip than many contemporaries when starting heavy trains. Their tractive effort exceeded that of the Union Pacific Big Boys (approximately 135,375 lbf), though the Big Boys were slightly heavier overall and had a different wheel arrangement optimized for different service.
In service, the Yellowstones hauled long strings of ore cars—often 100+ cars loaded or empty—between the iron ranges and the Lake Superior docks. The route included challenging grades; pulling empty cars back up the steep inclines from Duluth (reportedly among the steepest regularly used mainline grades in the U.S. at the time) tested their power to the limit. Their ability to handle heavy loads reliably was crucial.
During World War II, several M-4 locomotives were leased to the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) for helper service over Tennessee Pass and other freight duties. The D&RGW reportedly praised them highly as “the finest engines ever to operate there,” though one unit (No. 224) suffered a wreck due to air-brake issues and was returned.
The locomotives featured large cabs for crew comfort in cold weather and high-capacity tenders that reduced the need for frequent refueling and watering on ore runs.
Dieselization came relatively late to the DM&IR compared to many railroads. Most Yellowstones remained in service into the late 1950s and early 1960s. Only one locomotive (No. 237) was retired early after a wreck; it was sold for scrap. The remainder were retired between 1958 and 1963 as diesel locomotives took over all mainline duties. The last operating Yellowstone reportedly pulled its final ore train in 1960.
The following comes from Robert Le Massena regarding these big engines:
"The Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway is a most unusual carrier in several ways, one of them being that the only new steam motive power it ever purchased was a fleet of enormous 2-8-8-4’s. Only three other railroads (Baltimore & Ohio, Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific) owned locomotives of that wheel arrangement, and only those of the NP were larger and heavier.
There were 18 of them on the DM&IR, numbered 220-237. One of the DM&IR’s claims to fame; it was one of the last Class I railroads in the country to use steam power for regular freight operations. One movement was not completely dieselized until 1961, and a couple of the 2-8-8-4’s stayed alive in excursion service thru 1962.
The DM&IR Railway was formed in 1938 when the Duluth, Missabe & Northern and the Duluth & Iron Range Railroads combined their corporate entities into a single organization. The new company inherited the locomotives of its two components, none of which were of recent design. The D&IR Railroad’s latest engines were three Baldwin 2-8-2’s built in 1923, and nothing on the DM&IR Railroad’s roster was newer than ten ALCO 2-10-2’s built in 1919, except four 0-10-0 Baldwin switchers erected in 1928.
Four of the DM&IR’s twelve big 2-8-8-4’s, built by Baldwin between 1910 and 1917, had been converted from compound to single-expansion between 1929 and 1931, and the 2-10-2’s had been improved by rebuilding, but neither could be considered as modern motive power. Nevertheless, the two railroads had managed to handle immense tonnages of iron ore, hauling it from mines in the Vermilion and Mesabi Ranges to the Lake Superior ports of Two Harbors and Duluth, Minnesota, over distances ranging from 75 to 125 miles.
World War II was already well under way when the DM&IR was formed, and it soon became evident that its motive power, no matter how improved or maintained, was incapable of handling the additional traffic soon to be required by the nation’s steel mills, particularly those of the U.S. Steel Company which owned the DM&IR. The railroad was a crucial link in the transport of iron ore, which moved by ships on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie directly to lake-side blast furnaces near Chicago, Illinois, or to reload facilities of the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad (also owned by U.S. Steel) for forwarding to the mills in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, region.
What the DM&IR needed was a locomotive which could effectively double the tonnage of iron ore moving over the line from mine to dock. By collaborating closely with the railroad’s operating people, Baldwin’s designers produced a remarkably satisfactory locomotive. A great many items were considered, among them one-piece machinery bed (also known as an engine and tender bed), forced-feed lubrication and even the tender capacity.
Since steam generating ability was a basic factor, the boiler was provided with a firebox having a grate area of 125 square feet, and the steam pressure was set at 240 psi. Four 26 × 32-inch cylinders and 63-inch diameter driving wheels produced a tractive effort of 140,000 pounds. (The machinery dimensions were identical with those of the NP railroad’s 2-8-8-4’s, but the latter had 250-psi boiler pressure.) The engine alone weighed 695,000 pounds, just 18,000 pounds less than the NP monster.
The tender rode on a 4-10 bed and weighed 515,000 pounds fully loaded. Its water capacity of 25,000 gallons was adequate for a trip of about 200 miles with 10,000 tons of iron ore.The first eight locomotives (class M3, Nos. 220-227) were delivered in early 1941, and they bore construction numbers 62526-62533. They were amazingly successful, and were placed in pooled service after only three trips with supervised operation.
They steamed well and exceeded the estimates for fuel consumption. In the fall of that year, when DM&IR began to curtail operations because the lakes were starting to freeze over, most of the 2-8-8-4’s were leased to the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, whose surge of war-generated traffic had created an acute shortage of heavy motive power. After the lakes had begun to thaw the following spring, the locomotives were returned to the DM&IR for their customary service, hauling 10,000-ton trains of iron ore. On occasion they were able to handle even heavier loads. In 1943 the other ten 2-8-8-4’s (class M4, Nos. 228-237) were added to help with the still mounting tonnages."
Of the 18 locomotives built, three survive today—all preserved in Minnesota, close to where they worked. They represent a remarkable legacy of these engineering marvels.

These three survivors allow railfans and historians to appreciate the sheer scale and complexity of these articulated giants. No. 227, in particular, benefits from indoor protection at the museum.
The Missabe's Yellowstones were the last major class of large steam locomotives built for heavy ore service in the Upper Midwest. They combined raw power, innovative features for their time (roller bearings, large tenders, all-weather cabs), and proven reliability in demanding conditions. While only three remain, they stand as tangible reminders of an era when steam ruled the rails and iron from Minnesota helped win a world war. Today, visitors to northern Minnesota can still stand beside these behemoths and imagine the thunder of 140,000 pounds of tractive effort moving mile-long ore trains through the Iron Range. They remain among the most impressive steam locomotives ever to turn a wheel in North America.
