Ignite Your Independence Day with Fireworks and Scenic Rails: Blue Ridge Scenic Railway’s Firecracker Special
As the 4th of July approaches in 2026, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, Georgia, invites you to celebrate America in true patriotic style aboard its Firecracker Special. On Friday, July 3, 2026, climb aboard for a magical 4-hour roundtrip journey along the Toccoa River through the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Departing from the historic downtown depot, you’ll enjoy breathtaking mountain views by day and cap the evening with a spectacular fireworks display during a 2-hour layover in the twin towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. It’s the perfect family-friendly, all-ages adventure blending nostalgia, nature, and fireworks under the stars.

Railroading in this corner of North Georgia dates back to 1886, when the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad laid tracks through Blue Ridge and onward toward Copperhill, Tennessee. The line featured dramatic curves like the famous “hook” (Hiawassee Loop) and became a lifeline for shipping goods, mail, and supplies. By 1905, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) operated the route, and the iconic Blue Ridge Depot was built that same year.
Passenger service thrived for decades, but the last regular passenger train left Blue Ridge in 1951. Freight continued until the L&N ceased operations in 1987. In 1990, a dedicated group of local citizens launched a restoration effort to preserve this vital piece of mountain heritage. Their hard work paid off: the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway officially opened for passenger excursions in 1998, running the original 26-mile route along the Toccoa River.
Today, the railway is a thriving heritage operation and a subsidiary of the Georgia Northeastern Railroad (which still handles freight on the line). It carries more than 78,000 passengers annually and has been owned by Patriot Rail since 2015. Conductors share stories of indigenous history, local logging, mining, and how railroads shaped the region’s small towns into resort destinations.
This year’s Firecracker Special is a one-night-only Independence Day highlight. The train departs the historic Blue Ridge depot at 7:00 PM for a 4-hour roundtrip covering 26 scenic miles to McCaysville/Copperhill. You’ll travel through lush forests, alongside the sparkling Toccoa River, and across historic bridges with narration highlighting the area’s rich past.
The highlight? A 2-hour layover in the charming sister towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee—right on the state line. Stroll the quaint downtowns, grab dinner at local eateries, browse shops, or simply relax riverside. As darkness falls, the town’s fireworks show lights up the sky, creating unforgettable views from your train-side vantage point or while exploring on foot.
Coach options include:
Service animals are welcome (per ADA guidelines); emotional support animals are not.
Every ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway feels like stepping back in time, but the Firecracker Special adds extra sparkle. During the layover, the festive atmosphere in McCaysville/Copperhill—complete with fireworks—makes it a true holiday experience.
The journey is suitable for all ages and perfect for families, couples, or groups. Comfortable seating, onboard restrooms, and friendly crew ensure a relaxing trip. Note that exact departure times and equipment are confirmed closer to the date, but the 7 PM start is standard for this special.
