One of its most anticipated annual highlights is the Fireworks Train, timed to coincide with local Independence Day celebrations. The railroad recently shared a vibrant promotional poster on Facebook confirming this year’s Fireworks Train for Tuesday, June 30, 2026, departing at 8:00 PM. While the official website currently remains light on 2026 specifics, the poster and established patterns from prior years provide clear details for planning your trip.
A Brief History of the Walkersville Southern Railroad
The WSRR operates on a historic 6.72-mile stretch of track originally constructed in 1872 by the Frederick and Pennsylvania Line Railroad. It later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad network, serving local industries like lime kilns in Walkersville. After decades of freight service, flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 damaged key infrastructure, leading to abandonment of parts of the line.
Dedicated volunteers began restoration efforts in the early 1990s. Tourist excursions started in 1995, and by the late 1990s the line extended to its current southern terminus near Frederick. Today, it’s a beloved heritage railway offering a nostalgic journey through Frederick County’s scenic countryside, crossing bridges over the Monocacy River and Tuscarora Creek.
The railroad’s fleet includes distinctive industrial diesel locomotives (many rare GE and Plymouth switchers from the WWII era) and occasional visiting steam engines. Passengers ride in restored vintage 1920s passenger cars, open-air flatcars, or the more luxurious Parlor Car. A small museum at the historic Walkersville depot displays railroad artifacts and a model layout.
What to Expect on the Fireworks Train
Past iterations of the event (often called the Star-Spangled Fireworks Special) follow a memorable format that pairs a relaxing train ride with prime fireworks viewing:
- The train departs the Walkersville station at 8:00 PM.
- It travels to the end of the line.
- Upon return, it stops at a designated viewing area where passengers disembark.
- Guests watch the spectacular aerial fireworks display (this year aligning with the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company Carnival fireworks on June 30).
- After the show, passengers re-board for a short ride back to the station.
Organizers recommend bringing a flashlight and a blanket to sit on. The experience is family-friendly and offers a unique, elevated vantage point for the fireworks alongside the charm of a vintage train ride. Note that the event is not handicap accessible, and restrooms are limited once the train departs (porta-potties are available at the station before and after).
