Missouri Polar Express Train Rides: A Complete Guide
Published: March 13, 2025
By: Adam Burns
The magic and wonder of the holiday season come alive aboard the Polar Express Train Rides in Missouri. Inspired by the beloved children's book "The Polar Express" by Chris Van Allsburg, this enchanting holiday experience brings to life the tale of young children embarking on a magical journey to the North Pole. Missouri offers a delightful Polar Express experience where families can immerse themselves in this heartwarming holiday tradition.
This guide will navigate you through the Polar Express train rides in Missouri, providing vital information on what to expect, how to prepare, and why this magical ride is perfect for creating lasting holiday memories.
The Polar Express Experience
Set against the backdrop of Missouri's scenic landscapes, The Polar Express envelopes passengers in a holiday fantasy world. The journey typically begins with everyone boarding a festively decorated train, where passengers are welcomed by enthusiastic conductors and uniformed staff who recreate scenes from the "Polar Express" book and movie.
This theatrical presentation includes hot chocolate served by singing and dancing chefs, a live reading of the "Polar Express" story, and a thrilling visit from Santa Claus himself. Every child receives a special gift of a silver bell as a keepsake of their Polar Express journey.
Experience on Board
The Decor and Atmosphere: Step into a world of wonder as the train’s interior is lavishly decorated with twinkling lights, garlands, and ornaments. The ambiance is designed to transport passengers straight into the heart of the Polar Express story.
Engaging Performances: The train staff actively engage with passengers through lively performances, reenacting memorable scenes and encouraging kids to join in the singing. The highlight is the hot chocolate service, as chefs dance through the aisles with trays of rich, steaming cocoa.
The Storytelling: As the train journeys toward the 'North Pole,' a vivid narration of "The Polar Express" captures everyone's imagination. This is often accompanied by animated backdrops or sound effects that further immerse passengers in the tale.
The Santa Encounter: A visit from Santa is the climax of the trip. Santa boards the train, greeting each child, and gifting them a silver bell—a symbolic gesture from the story. This moment is filled with wonder and excitement, leaving children in awe of the holiday magic.
Locations
Branson Scenic Railway (Branson): The Branson Scenic Railway is a true tourist attraction thanks to its location in Branson, Missouri, a major draw by itself with a wide array of country-themed venues.
An excursion train here sprang up following a new short line's launch in late 1992. That year the Missouri & Northern Arkansas Railroad began freight service over former Missouri Pacific (MP) trackage in Arkansas and western Missouri purchased from Union Pacific (MP's successor).
The Branson Scenic Railway debuted the following year, whisking passengers on a 40-mile round trip through the beautiful Ozark Mountains. The scenery, coupled with line's many tunnels, cuts, fills, and bridges continues to bring people back year after year.
If you are considering a train ride in the near future the railroad is a good choice; you can ride in dome cars for maximum viewing or enjoy dinner during your trip.
The rides depart from Branson's restored wooden depot, originally completed by the White River Railway in 1905 (which later joined Missouri Pacific).
St. Louis Union Station (St. Louis): One of a few locations where official The Polar Express events are hosted by Amtrak. Today, St. Louis Union Station has been transformed from a major passenger terminal into an entertainment/shopping venue.
However, it's still worth visit just to see the station itself; inspired by the grand chateau's of France the terminal was the work of architectural firm Link & Cameron. After several years of construction it opened in 1894.
Perhaps the facility's only drawback was its stub-end design requiring the 22 railroads serving it to squeeze into its 16 platforms (32 tracks) beneath its massive train shed.
This made for an awe-inspiring sight from ground level as a web of steel rails headed in every different direction; main lines, a coach yard, storage tracks, a small freight yard, an express yard, and of course the approach and platform trackage.
All of this was managed by the station's own railroad, the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA), which remains an operating freight line. The St. Louis Union Station will host official The Polar Express train rides in 2022.
According to the organization the trip will "depart from St. Louis Union Station for a 45 minute adventure to the North Pole filled with magic, songs, and cheer."
The Polar Express in Missouri captures the essence of the season, blending storytelling, scenic views, and festive cheer into an unforgettable experience. As the train chugs along through Missouri's winter beauty, passengers of all ages find themselves fully immersed in a Christmas fantasy.
Whether it's your first ride or an established tradition, the Polar Express is a brilliant way to celebrate the spirit of the holidays in Missouri. So grab your golden ticket and embark on a journey that promises to delight, inspire, and create enduring memories for the entire family.
