New Mexico's Fall Foliage Train Rides
Published: September 25, 2025
By: Adam Burns
New Mexico, with its diverse landscapes and vibrant culture, offers a unique backdrop for experiencing the splendid colors of autumn.
While the state might not be the first that comes to mind for fall foliage, the changing leaves in combination with its striking deserts, mountains, and rivers create a spectacular display that can be best enjoyed by train.
This guide will showcase some of the most enchanting train rides in New Mexico to witness fall foliage, detailing the experiences and scenery each offers.
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (Chama)
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad offers one of the most authentic and breathtaking train rides in North America. This historic narrow-gauge railroad runs between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado, taking passengers on a 64-mile journey through the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
The route crosses the state border eleven times and climbs over the Cumbres Pass at an elevation of 10,015 feet, offering spectacular views of fall foliage.
The C&TS operates the longest stretch of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western's narrow-gauge (3-foot) network still in existence in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.
The Rio Grande's so-called "San Juan District" was built to serve Colorado's then-booming silver mining industry but survived as a branch until the 1960's. The nearby Durango & Silverton Narrow-Gauge (D&SNG) also maintains a segment of this same network, the Silverton Branch from Durango to Silverton.
For train enthusiasts visiting either the C&TS or D&SNG is a chance to step back in time, witnessing how railroads operated more than a century ago. Much of the original infrastructure, buildings, and even historic steam locomotives remain preserve. It is also a great way to view the changing colors of autumn as the railroad hosts excursions through October every year.
Fall Foliage Highlight
During autumn, the train weaves through golden aspen groves and fiery cottonwoods that line the Rio de los Pinos, creating a stunning contrast with the evergreens and the distant snow-capped peaks. The journey during this time offers vibrant bursts of color, ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Sky Railway
Sky Railway is a reimagined and revitalized passenger rail service operating in northern New Mexico, offering a distinctive combination of breathtaking scenery, historical adventures, and themed experiences. The project represents a unique collaboration focused on preserving and transforming the iconic rail heritage of the region into an attraction for both locals and tourists.
The roots of the operation can be traced back to the historic Santa Fe Southern Railway, which operated passenger and freight services between the city of Santa Fe and the northern New Mexican town of Lamy.
Despite its historical significance, the line faced financial challenges and was in jeopardy of shutting down permanently. Recognizing the potential and cultural value of this railway, a group of investors and visionaries, including American author George R.R. Martin, stepped in to revive and reinvent this treasured piece of local history. After extensive planning and renovations, Sky Railway made its debut, ushering in a new era for the historic rail line.
One of the standout features of the attraction is its diverse array of themed excursions, which blend entertainment, education, and exploration. Passengers can select from a variety of curated train rides, each offering a different narrative and experience.
These themed rides often incorporate elements such as live music, theatrical performances, and storytelling, transforming a simple journey into an immersive adventure. By focusing on unique themes and interactive experiences, Sky Railway successfully attracts families, history buffs, and adventure seekers alike.
The railway operates over a picturesque route that spans approximately 18 miles, running from downtown Santa Fe to Lamy. This scenic journey offers passengers stunning views of the rugged landscapes, mountainous backdrops, and expansive vistas that define northern New Mexico. The route provides a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural context, offering passengers a glimpse into both the region's environmental splendor and its rich history.
Sky Railway's emphasis on preserving cultural heritage is evident in its commitment to restoring and maintaining vintage rail equipment. The train cars have been lovingly refurbished to provide modern comforts while retaining their historical charm. Passengers can enjoy the luxurious vintage ambiance as they travel through this captivating landscape, adding an element of nostalgia to their day.
In addition to the regular themed excursions, Sky Railway plays a significant role in the local community by hosting special events and collaborating with artists, performers, and local businesses. The railway acts as a mobile venue, offering a platform for cultural expression and entertainment. Seasonal events, private charters, and holiday-themed rides are just a few ways in which the railway captures the community's imagination.
Sky Railway's revival has a broader significance beyond entertainment; it underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating regional history while adapting to contemporary tourism trends. Through innovative experiences and a commitment to the community, Sky Railway serves as a model for revitalizing heritage railways elsewhere.
By transforming a nearly defunct rail line into a thriving tourist attraction, the railroad preserves the legacy of rail travel and creates vibrant new opportunities for people to connect with the region's heritage and landscape. Whether for a themed adventure or simply to soak in the beauty of New Mexico, Sky Railway promises passengers an unforgettable experience.
Fall foliage in New Mexico, experienced from the comfort of a scenic train ride, combines the thrill of travel with the timeless beauty of the landscape. Whether you're exploring the rugged terrain surrounding the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic or embracing the gentle beauty on the way to Lamy with the Sky Railway, each journey offers a unique perspective on the impact of autumn in the Southwest.
As you plan your trip, remember the fleeting nature of fall colors and pack accordingly for crisp autumn days. Above all, savor the experience of the ride as it meanders through New Mexico's autumnal splendor, offering a glorious tapestry of color and culture.
