Norfolk Southern Unveils No. 250 “The Freedom” – The Latest Star in Its America’s 250 Locomotive Series

On July 2, 2026, Norfolk Southern officially rolled out its newest commemorative locomotive: No. 250 “The Freedom.” The striking unit, featuring a majestic bald eagle in flight across its flanks, marks the completion of NS’s six-unit America’s 250 Locomotive Series — a powerful tribute to the United States’ 250th anniversary and the generations of railroaders who have helped build and move the nation.

NS’s official reveal video and photos captured the moment perfectly. Painted by the skilled crews at Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, No. 250 required more than 1,100 labor hours, 116 gallons of primer, paint, and clear coat, and a complex metallic finish. Large vinyl decals — seven pieces stretching over 24 feet — bring the soaring bald eagle and patriotic graphics to life.
The locomotive is an SD70ACe (formerly NS 1184), one of three EMD-built units in the series (alongside Nos. 1776 and 2026). Its clean silver-gray body is accented with flowing red, white, and blue graphics that evoke motion and freedom. The bald eagle motif perfectly captures the theme: strength, resolve, independence, and determination — the American spirit that has carried the country forward for 250 years through hard work and perseverance.
The Full America’s 250 Fleet
Norfolk Southern’s commemorative series honors iconic American symbols while celebrating rail’s enduring role in connecting communities and powering the economy. All six locomotives were built in the United States and painted at Juniata:
- No. 1776 “The Bell” — Honors the Liberty Bell and the Pennsylvania Railroad’s historic role in transporting it across the country so millions could see it.
- No. 2026 “The Lady Liberty” — Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, symbolizing freedom, welcome, and the connections that bind America.
- No. 250 “The Freedom” — The newest arrival, with its dramatic bald eagle in flight.
- No. 8096 “The Soaring” — Features an eagle rendered in stars and stripes, celebrating American ambition and vision.
- No. 8118 “The Stars & Stripes” — Carries the official America 250 branding and pays tribute to 250 years of determination and progress.
- No. 8143 “The Patriot” — Incorporates NS’s classic Patriotic Thoroughbred icon, honoring the grit, reliability, and pride of railroaders who keep America moving 24/7.
Three of the units (1776, 2026, and 250) are EMD SD70ACe locomotives built by Progress Rail in Muncie, Indiana. The remaining three (8096, 8118, and 8143) are GE/Wabtec units built in Erie, Pennsylvania. All now wear these stunning custom schemes and are entering regular freight service across NS’s 22-state network while also participating in special events.
A Summer of Celebrations
The America’s 250 locomotives are joining a broader series of public events this summer, including select appearances alongside Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive on its East Coast tour stops. Notable upcoming or recent stops include Philadelphia (July 4–5) and Altoona (July 9–10). Limited-edition merchandise celebrating the series is also available.
Norfolk Southern traces its roots to 1827, making it one of America’s oldest railroads. These locomotives aren’t just beautiful paint schemes — they’re rolling reminders of how rail has carried liberty, commerce, and progress mile by mile for nearly two centuries. From transporting the Liberty Bell to moving the goods that keep today’s economy running, NS and its predecessor lines have been woven into the American story.
No. 250 now joins that proud tradition. With its powerful eagle soaring across the rails, it stands as a fitting symbol for a nation celebrating 250 years — and for the railroaders still carrying America forward.
