Norfolk Southern’s Five Historic Tour Stops: Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 Joins the Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary
Published: July 2, 2026
By: Adam Burns
In 2026, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary (the Semiquincentennial), two of America’s great railroads—Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern—joined forces for a once-in-a-lifetime railroading spectacle. Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, embarked on a coast-to-coast tour. The eastern leg of this journey took the massive 4-8-8-4 articulated steam engine onto Norfolk Southern rails for the first time in its history, bringing it through the Northeast and Midwest in a powerful display of shared railroad heritage.
This collaboration highlighted the railroads’ pivotal role in building and connecting the nation. Big Boy 4014, built in 1941 in Schenectady, New York, returned to its eastern roots while pulling a special consist that included Norfolk Southern’s new America’s 250 commemorative locomotives, Union Pacific heritage units, and historic passenger cars (notably the restored Pullman Marco Polo, once used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt).
Norfolk Southern hosted five major public display events on its network. These stops offered railfans, families, and communities the chance to see the Big Boy up close alongside patriotic modern locomotives and historic equipment. The events emphasized safety, with free or ticketed access, shuttles at some locations, and strict rules to stay clear of active tracks. Here’s a detailed look at each of the five Norfolk Southern tour stops. The below information is courtesy directly from NS, to learn more please visit: https://norfolksouthern.com/america250
1. Buffalo, New York – June 10, 2026 (Bison Yard)
The tour’s first major NS stop celebrated Buffalo’s role as a vital industrial and freight gateway linking the Midwest, Northeast, and Great Lakes. Big Boy 4014 was displayed alongside Norfolk Southern’s New York Central heritage locomotive.
Display hours: 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. EDT
Admission: Free (no ticket required)
Access: Free shuttles from Walden Galleria Mall (north side near Primark). No on-site parking or pedestrian access to the yard. This stop marked the beginning of the Big Boy’s historic journey across NS territory.
2. Scranton, Pennsylvania – June 15–16, 2026 (Steamtown National Historic Site)
Few places better preserve America’s steam railroading legacy than Scranton. The Big Boy appeared at the Steamtown National Historic Site, a fitting venue for one of the most powerful steam locomotives ever built.
Display hours: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT both days
Admission: Ticketed viewing only (reservations and parking handled through the National Park Service)
Access: Pedestrian gates along the state and county employee parking lot behind the Lackawanna Transit Center. Printed or digital tickets required. This multi-day stop allowed extended viewing and highlighted the deep rail history of northeastern Pennsylvania.
3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – July 4–5, 2026
The most symbolically powerful stop occurred in the birthplace of American independence. Big Boy rolled into Philadelphia for Fourth of July weekend, underscoring railroads’ historical role in moving people, industry, and commerce that helped forge the nation.
Display hours:
- July 4: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. EDT
- July 5: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT
Admission: Free (no ticket required)
Access: Details coordinated via Union Pacific’s schedule and local announcements.
This stop combined patriotic celebration with rail heritage in one of America’s most historic cities.
4. Altoona, Pennsylvania – July 9–10, 2026 (Rose Yard)
Altoona, long a powerhouse of railroad operations, engineering, and maintenance (home to the famous Horseshoe Curve and Juniata Locomotive Shop), welcomed the Big Boy alongside Norfolk Southern’s Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit.
Display hours: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. EDT both days
Admission: Free (no ticket required)
Access: Free shuttles from Peoples Natural Gas Field or the west end of Logan Valley Mall (by former Macy’s). ADA parking available at the field. No parking at the display site; walk-in access via 8th Ave & 5th St. Shuttles could close early if demand was high.
This stop paid tribute to Pennsylvania’s unmatched railroad legacy.
5. Fostoria, Ohio – July 14, 2026 (Fostoria Automotive Distribution Center)
The final NS-hosted major display took place in Fostoria, Ohio, featuring Big Boy 4014 with a historic consist of business cars, including the Marco Polo.
Display hours: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT
Admission: Free (no ticket required)
Access: Details provided closer to the date via official channels.
This stop wrapped up the NS portion of the eastern tour on a high note, showcasing the full patriotic consist.
The Supporting Cast: Norfolk Southern’s America’s 250 Locomotive Series
Throughout the tour, Big Boy 4014 was accompanied by Norfolk Southern’s striking new America’s 250 locomotive series. Unveiled in May 2026, the six custom-painted units include:
- No. 1776 “The Bell” (honoring the Liberty Bell and its rail journeys)
- No. 2026 “The Lady Liberty”
- No. 250 “The Freedom” (featuring a bald eagle)
- And others with patriotic themes like “The Stars & Stripes”
These modern diesel locomotives, painted at NS’s Juniata Shop in Altoona, traveled in the consist and represented the ongoing innovation and patriotism of American railroading.
Beyond the Five Major Stops
In addition to these display days, the Big Boy made more than 50 whistle-stops across 10 states during the eastern leg, many for the first time in states like Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. Some locations offered special photo opportunities or even limited ride experiences in vintage cars.
Safety First
All events stressed the importance of safety. Visitors were required to stay at least 25 feet from all tracks, follow on-site instructions, wear closed-toe shoes, and remain in designated public areas. Active railroad tracks are never for public access.
A Lasting Legacy
Norfolk Southern’s five tour stops with 4014 has thus far created unforgettable moments that connected past and present. They have celebrated the railroads that helped build America while showcasing modern equipment and the dedicated railroaders who keep the network moving.
Limited-edition merchandise inspired by the America’s 250 series is available at the stops and online, allowing fans to take home a piece of the celebration.
This joint effort between UP and NS stands as a powerful reminder of how railroads have shaped the United States for nearly two centuries—and continue to do so today.
