Oklahoma’s railroad museums sit on the Katy, the Santa Fe, the Frisco, and the Rock Island. The Oklahoma Railway Museum in Oklahoma City keeps the 1905 Oakwood depot of the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient and a short stretch of the old Katy. Enid displays Frisco 4-8-2 No. 1519 beside a Santa Fe freight house. Waynoka’s 1910 Harvey House remembers the 1929 air-rail transfer. El Reno’s 1906 Rock Island depot is the Canadian County Historical Museum, and the boarding point for a Brill streetcar.
Santa Fe 2-8-0 #643, preserved the Oklahoma Railway Museum. The engine was built in 1879 by Hinkley Locomotive Works as 4-4-0 #73 named "H.C. Hardon". Rebuilt by the Santa Fe in 1897 into a 2-8-0 (originally as No. 933, then renumbered to No. 643 in 1900). It is noted as the second-oldest surviving Santa Fe locomotive preserved close to its historical form. Museum photo.
Regular diesel rides at the Oklahoma City museum ended in August. Halloween and Polar Express dates, the El Reno streetcar, and Farmrail are on the Oklahoma scenic-train guide. American-Rails does not sell tickets. Confirm the doors before you drive.

The first train into Indian Territory ran on June 6, 1870, on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas. That company had been the Union Pacific Railway, Southern Branch, and it took the Katy name on May 23, 1870. The track reached the Arkansas River on July 4, 1871, and Denison and the Red River the following summer. Union Pacific acquired the Katy in 1988. Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907. Mileage peaked at 6,572 in 1920. The 2017 figure is 3,158. BNSF, Union Pacific, and Kansas City Southern are the Class I names on the state page. The Santa Fe, the Frisco, the Rock Island, and the Katy built most of the depots these museums keep. The state account is the Oklahoma railroads page.
Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer has run between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth since June 14, 1999. Farmrail excursions stay on the scenic guide, with the museum trains and the El Reno streetcar. The Oklahoma City Streetcar is city transit on a downtown loop. Neighbors with their own museum pages are Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas.
The Oklahoma Railway Museum is at 3400 NE Grand Boulevard, near NE 36th Street and Interstate 35. The Central Oklahoma Railfan Club joined the National Railway Historical Society in 1970 as the Central Oklahoma Chapter. The group bought the present land in 1999 and opened the museum in 2000. The chapter’s public name is the Oklahoma Railway Museum.
The depot on the grounds is the Oakwood station, built in 1905 by the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient at Oakwood, in Oklahoma Territory. The Santa Fe operated it until 1958. The museum bought it and moved it here in 2000. It holds the ticket office, a display room, and the gift shop. The 100-foot turntable is a Frisco table installed at Sapulpa in 1920 and moved to the Oklahoma City yard in 1929, where it replaced an 82-foot table. BNSF gave it to the museum in 1994. It arrived on the grounds in April 2017. A pit that would put it back in operation is part of the expansion plan. The table is a display.
A Rock Island baggage car of 1927 holds a model layout. Steam weekends in April 2026, with the 0-4-0T Sadie, Jeddo Coal No. 126, have already run. Regular rides, vintage diesel and historic coaches on a short former Katy stretch, ended in August. The grounds remain open for a walk-through. The Halloween Train is October 30 and 31. The Polar Express follows on select dates from about November 20 through December 31, and that calendar is the Oklahoma Polar Express page. Hours and tickets follow the museum and the scenic guide.
The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma is at 702 N. Washington Street. The Enid chapter of the National Railway Historical Society incorporated the museum in October 1977, and it opened to the public in April 1989. The building is a former Santa Fe freight house, across from the Santa Fe passenger depot. Enid was a crossing of the Rock Island, the Frisco, and the Santa Fe.
Frisco 4-8-2 No. 1519, a Baldwin of 1925, is the steam locomotive on the property. It is one of the Frisco’s 1500-class Mountains. It stood in a park in Enid after retirement, and the museum brought it to the freight house in 1997. A cosmetic restoration was opened as a fundraising project in October 2025. Sister No. 1522 is at the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri. A General Electric 50-ton switcher, formerly Vulcan Materials No. 1, is also here. A spring trip it has pulled toward Okeene is posted by the museum when one is set. Cabooses, freight cars, and a collection of dining-car china fill out the yard and the building. Hours follow the museum.
The Santa Fe built through Waynoka in 1887. The passenger depot and the Harvey House beside it were built in 1910. The Harvey House opened in July 1910, on the Chicago–Los Angeles main line, and closed in 1937. The Waynoka Historical Society keeps the Air-Rail Museum on the second floor of that building, at 1383 Cleveland Street, with a gift shop below. The society’s site says both buildings are on the National Register. The restoration of the Harvey House was finished in late 1999. BNSF still runs the Southern Transcon past the door.
In July 1929 Transcontinental Air Transport made Waynoka the overnight transfer on its New York–Los Angeles route. Charles A. Lindbergh laid out the stops. Passengers flew a Ford Tri-Motor by day and rode the Santa Fe overnight from Waynoka to Clovis, New Mexico. The inaugural Pennsylvania Railroad train left New York on July 7, 1929. The air party reached Waynoka the next day and Los Angeles on July 9. Amelia Earhart was on the company’s staff and was among the guests at the Harvey House. Hours follow the society.
The Canadian County Historical Museum occupies El Reno’s Rock Island depot of 1906, at 300 South Grand Avenue. The Heritage Express boards there. The car is a 1924 Brill streetcar, and the line runs about a mile and a half from the depot into downtown. The posted public trips are Saturdays from April through September. The calendar stays on the scenic guide.
Two smaller depot stops are worth a sentence each. Yukon’s Best Railroad Museum is a Rock Island boxcar at 3rd and Main, open by appointment at 405-354-5079. Hugo’s Frisco depot is a county historical museum. Confirm both before you detour.
Confirm hours and which locomotive is on the property before you travel.
