Midwest

Illinois Railway Museum

The IRM, located in Union, is the largest railroad museum in the United States. Established in 1953, it is dedicated to the preservation and display of railway equipment and history. The vast 450-acre site houses over 450 pieces of historic railway equipment, ranging from steam and diesel locomotives to electric trains, passenger cars, and cabooses. The museum offers a glimpse into the evolution of rail transportation and its role in industrial and social development.

Visitors to the IRM can explore a wide array of exhibits, including an extensive collection of vintage rolling stock, some of which has been meticulously restored to operational condition. The museum operates several trains on its tracks, offering rides on various types of historic trains that provide an authentic railroading experience. Its exhibits not only showcase rail equipment but also delve into the stories of the people and industries that depended on railroads.

Educational programs and special events, such as “Day Out With Thomas” and “Railroad Days,” further enhance the museum experience. As a nonprofit organization run by dedicated volunteers, IRM continues its mission to educate the public about the importance of railroads in shaping American life and industry.

During the fall they host Pumpkin Trains throughout October where visitors can ride aboard Halloween-themed electric interurban trains to the pumpkin patch were kids can pick out their pumpkin to carve.

Little River Railroad (Michigan)

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

During the fall they host the Pumpkin Junction that includes an entire day of activities for the entire family.

West

Chehalis Centralia Railroad (Washington)

The Chehalis Centralia Railroad is a heritage railway located in Lewis County, Washington. It was established to preserve and celebrate the region's rich railroad history.

The railroad operates vintage steam and diesel locomotives, offering scenic train rides that transport visitors through the picturesque countryside of the Chehalis Valley. Covering a historical route, these excursions provide a unique glimpse into the past, highlighting the role of railroads in the area's development.

As a nonprofit organization, the railroad relies on volunteers and donations to maintain and restore its locomotives and rolling stock, ensuring the continuation of this cultural journey.

During October the organization hosts a pumpkin train for a few days where the kids can ride out and pick out a pumpkin for carving.
