South Shore Line to Launch Monon Corridor Service March 31
South Shore Line to Launch Monon Corridor Service March 31
Published: March 20, 2026
By: Adam Burns
After years of planning, funding, and construction, the South Shore Line is set to inaugurate its long-awaited Monon Corridor service on March 31, 2026, marking a major expansion of commuter rail service in northwest Indiana and the Chicago metropolitan region.
According to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), passenger service on the new corridor will officially begin midday on March 31, with the first southbound train departing Hammond Gateway Station at 11:45 a.m. CDT toward Munster/Dyer. The first northbound train will follow shortly thereafter, departing Munster/Dyer at 12:35 p.m.
The opening represents the completion of the West Lake Corridor project, an approximately 8-mile extension branching south from Hammond into Lake County, Indiana.

New Corridor, New Service Pattern
The Monon Corridor becomes the South Shore Line’s first branch line, creating a dual-corridor system:
-
Lakeshore Corridor: South Bend to Chicago (existing main line)
-
Monon Corridor: Munster/Dyer to Chicago (new branch)
Four new stations will open with the service:
-
Hammond Gateway (connection point)
-
South Hammond (173rd Street)
-
Munster Ridge
-
Munster/Dyer
The new service introduces a mix of operations:
-
Peak-hour trains: Direct service to downtown Chicago
-
Off-peak service: Shuttle trains requiring transfer at Hammond Gateway
Officials note that nearly 30 additional weekday and weekend trains will be added to the system, significantly improving service frequency and regional connectivity.
Importantly, riders will be able to travel seamlessly across both corridors using a single ticket, with coordinated schedules designed to simplify transfers.
A Project Years in the Making
The Monon Corridor traces its origins to long-standing efforts to expand commuter rail access in fast-growing Lake County. Planning for a southern extension of the South Shore Line dates back to the mid-2000s, with funding approvals and federal grants secured in the late 2010s. Construction officially began in October 2020.
The route largely follows the former right-of-way of the historic Monon Railroad, from which the new corridor takes its name. In addition to new track and stations, the project includes modern infrastructure such as park-and-ride facilities, improved accessibility, and upgraded connections to the existing main line at Hammond Gateway.
Interurban Roots: The South Shore Line’s Legacy
The launch of the Monon Corridor represents the latest chapter in the long history of the South Shore Line—one of America’s last surviving interurban railways.
Originally established in the early 20th century as the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Railroad, the line was part of a broader network of electric interurban systems that once connected cities and towns across the Midwest. Unlike many of its counterparts, the South Shore Line endured, evolving from an interurban into a modern commuter railroad.
Key characteristics of its interurban heritage remain evident today:
-
Electric operation: The line continues to use overhead catenary power
-
Frequent service: Reflecting its origins as a regional connector
-
Urban-to-suburban reach: Linking smaller communities with Chicago
Today, the South Shore Line operates between South Bend, Indiana, and Millennium Station in downtown Chicago, serving as a vital transportation link for commuters and travelers alike.
A New Era for Northwest Indiana Commuting
With the Monon Corridor now ready for service, South Shore officials say the expansion is designed to meet increasing demand in one of Indiana’s fastest-growing regions.
By extending rail access deeper into Lake County, the new branch is expected to:
-
Reduce highway congestion
-
Encourage transit-oriented development
-
Provide more convenient commuting options to Chicago
As one of the most significant expansions in the line’s modern history, the March 31 opening signals not only a milestone for the South Shore Line but also a continuation of its interurban legacy—adapting a century-old system to meet 21st-century transportation needs.
