Southern Pacific's AC-9 2-8-8-4 Yellowstones

Published: July 5, 2026

By: Adam Burns

In the twilight of the steam era, the Southern Pacific operated some of the most distinctive and powerful articulated steam locomotives in North America. While the railroad is legendary for its fleet of cab-forward 4-8-8-2s (Classes AC-4 through AC-12), it also fielded a small but impressive group of conventional articulateds: the twelve 2-8-8-4 “Yellowstone” type locomotives of Class AC-9.

Built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1939 and numbered 3800–3811, these engines represented a deliberate departure from SP’s cab-forward orthodoxy. They were designed specifically to burn low-grade bituminous coal from New Mexico mines and operated in the conventional “smokebox forward” orientation. The AC-9s combined massive power with a sleek, partially streamlined appearance featuring Lima’s signature skyline casing.

By the late 1930s, Southern Pacific’s articulated steam fleet was dominated by oil-burning cab-forwards optimized for the long tunnels and snowsheds of Donner Pass and other mountain routes. These locomotives placed the cab at the front to keep crews out of smoke and cinders.

The AC-9s were built for a different operating environment: the relatively open routes of the Rio Grande Division and connections in the Southwest (primarily between Tucumcari, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas; and Tucson, Arizona). Here, the need for cab-forward protection was minimal, and SP wanted locomotives that could efficiently burn the abundant but lower-quality coal available locally. The 2-8-8-4 wheel arrangement (two leading wheels, two sets of eight driving wheels, and four trailing wheels) provided excellent adhesion and a large firebox while maintaining reasonable speed capability for both freight and occasional passenger service.

Lima delivered all twelve locomotives in October 1939 (construction numbers 7765–7776). They were among the last new steam locomotives SP would purchase and were the railroad’s largest and heaviest steam engines at the time. Their partially streamlined styling — including the skyline casing along the top of the boiler, air-smoothed surfaces, and later silver-painted pilots — gave them a modern, almost passenger-like appearance despite their freight-hauling mission.

Technical Specifications

The AC-9s shared many mechanical features with SP’s contemporary cab-forward classes (notably similar cylinder dimensions and boiler pressure), but their conventional layout, coal-burning firebox, and larger trailing truck wheels distinguished them.

Here is a compiled table of production and technical data drawn from builder’s records, SP diagrams, and contemporary sources:

The locomotives were simple articulateds (not compound Mallets), with power transmitted through four cylinders. They were equipped with feedwater heaters and featured robust construction suited to heavy freight work.

Service History

Upon delivery in late 1939, the entire class was assigned to the Southwest, hauling heavy freight trains over the routes connecting Tucumcari, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas; and Tucson, Arizona. They occasionally assisted premier passenger trains such as the Golden State Limited. Their high tractive effort and 75 mph capability made them versatile for both drag freight and faster schedules.

As dieselization advanced on these routes after World War II and local coal supplies became less economical, SP converted all twelve locomotives to oil burners between May and August 1950. Many received new or rebuilt tenders during this process.

In spring 1953, eleven of the AC-9s were transferred northward to Southern Pacific’s Modoc Line (between Sparks, Nevada, and Alturas, California), where they worked in freight and helper service. One locomotive (#3800) reportedly remained behind and was cannibalized for parts to keep the others running. On the Modoc Line they handled heavy trains through relatively open country, proving reliable into the mid-1950s.

Because of their conventional cab location and overall length/height, the AC-9s could not be routed over Donner Pass (snowshed clearance issues) when moving north; instead, they traveled via the Shasta Line to Klamath Falls, Oregon, then south on the Modoc Line. All twelve locomotives were retired between 1953 and 1956 and subsequently scrapped. None were preserved — a significant loss for steam historians and railfans, as these were the only conventional-cab articulateds SP operated in significant numbers after the early 1920s.

Legacy and Significance

The AC-9 class occupies a unique niche in Southern Pacific history. They demonstrated that even late in the steam era, the railroad was willing to innovate with specialized designs rather than simply ordering more cab-forwards. Their partial streamlining and skyline casings gave them a distinctive, almost elegant appearance that set them apart from the more utilitarian cab-forwards.

Technically, they matched the tractive effort of SP’s most powerful cab-forwards while offering a different operating profile suited to coal-fired service on flatter or less tunnel-intensive routes. As one of the last new steam locomotive classes delivered to SP, they symbolized both the peak of articulated steam power and the beginning of its rapid decline.

Today, the AC-9s live on in photographs, models (including highly detailed O-scale and HO models from manufacturers like Lionel), and the memories of those who saw these massive, handsome machines thundering across the Southwest and later the Modoc Line. They remain a fascinating “what if” in American steam locomotive history — powerful, stylish, and ultimately short-lived representatives of a vanishing era.
