In an era when railroads increasingly celebrate their heritage through specially painted locomotives, Union Pacific No. 1616 stands out as a powerful tribute to one of the most consequential figures in American—and railroad—history: President Abraham Lincoln. As part of Union Pacific’s Commemorative Locomotive series, No. 1616 honors Lincoln’s pivotal role in the creation of the transcontinental railroad, a project that forever changed the nation’s economic and geographic landscape. The railroad originally unveiled this special commemorative locomotive on April 30, 2025.

Long before he became president, Abraham Lincoln maintained close ties to the railroad industry. As a lawyer in Illinois, he represented railroads in various legal matters, gaining firsthand knowledge of their importance to commerce and expansion. His presidency would elevate that connection to historic significance.
In 1862, amid the turmoil of the Civil War, Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, authorizing the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. This legislation led directly to the formation of the Union Pacific Railroad and its counterpart, the Central Pacific Railroad, which would build westward from Omaha and eastward from California, respectively.
The completion of this monumental project was marked by the famous Golden Spike Ceremony in 1869—just four years after Lincoln’s assassination. Though he did not live to see its completion, the railroad stands as one of his most enduring legacies.
