Watco Unveils Patriotic America250 Commemorative Locomotive No. 250

Cherryvale, Kansas – Watco has joined the growing list of railroads honoring America’s upcoming 250th anniversary with the unveiling of a striking commemorative locomotive. On June 29, 2026, at the South Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad (SKOL) depot in Cherryvale, Kansas, the company revealed WAMX 250 — a freshly repainted SD60M now serving as a rolling tribute to the nation’s semiquincentennial.
The locomotive, formerly numbered WAMX 6071 and acquired from Union Pacific, had been stored in Watco’s surge fleet in Wichita, Kansas. Selected specifically for this milestone project, it underwent significant mechanical preparation before its dramatic transformation.

The unit now sports a vibrant red, white, and blue livery featuring a large, waving American flag prominently displayed across the sides. White stars accent the design, complemented by Watco’s signature “Proud to Keep America Moving” logo. The locomotive carries the number 250 (renumbered from 6071) in clear recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The repaint was executed by Southern Pride Equipment Painting, a Georgia-based firm experienced with Watco and other railroads’ commemorative units. Four painters worked in a large portable booth set up in Chanute, Kansas. The process involved degreasing, removing old vinyl decals, repairing any body damage, sanding, priming, applying multiple coats of paint and clearcoat, and installing new decals — consuming 30 gallons of materials and approximately 260 labor hours.
Prior to painting, a dedicated team in Wichita performed key mechanical upgrades. Diesel mechanics Jacob Dick and Will Dystart, along with electricians Michael Hawk and Richard Collins, replaced injectors, air valves, and electrical components to ensure the locomotive was in top condition for its new role.

WAMX 250 is now in active service on the South Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad, operating across south-central and southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma. The unit will continue Watco’s core mission of moving freight while serving as a highly visible symbol of national pride.
SKOL General Manager Jerry Waun highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project:
“From the teams who designed, prepared, and painted this locomotive to the railroaders who will operate it, this is a tribute to the generations that built America and to those carrying that spirit forward.”
Watco CEO Dan Smith emphasized the broader significance:
“We’re proud to mark America’s 250th anniversary with a locomotive that honors the legacy of this country and the industries that have built it. As this locomotive travels our network, it represents the connection between our customers, our communities, and the role rail continues to play in moving America forward.”
Part of a Companywide Celebration
The locomotive’s unveiling coincides with Watco’s own 43rd anniversary on July 1, 2026, marking two meaningful milestones with a single patriotic unit. It is also part of a companywide initiative launched earlier in January 2026 focused on celebrating employees and reflecting on themes of freedom, service, innovation, and progress.
A Growing Tradition Among Railroads
Watco’s America250 unit joins similar commemorative locomotives unveiled by other major carriers in 2026, including units from Norfolk Southern, BNSF, CSX, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, and Canadian National. These rolling tributes highlight the railroad industry’s deep roots in American history and its ongoing role in connecting communities and powering the economy.
With its bold flag motif and prominent numbering, WAMX 250 stands out as a powerful visual reminder of the nation’s heritage as it hauls freight across the heartland. Rail enthusiasts and communities along the SKOL are already taking notice of this newest addition to Watco’s fleet.
As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, locomotives like this one serve as moving ambassadors — honoring the past while keeping the nation’s vital rail network moving forward.
