Union Pacific’s legendary 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy” No. 4014 is scheduled to return to the main line in a big way this spring, kicking off the railroad’s first-ever coast-to-coast steam tour as part of a broader celebration tied to America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The opening chapter—known as the western leg—is set to begin Sunday, March 29, 2026, when the 4014 departs its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with members of Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet in tow, heading west toward California before looping back to Cheyenne.

Union Pacific has published the western-leg schedule on its official steam pages, noting that this first segment of the coast-to-coast effort will run from March 29 through April 24, concluding back in Cheyenne.
