Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 Continues Historic Coast-to-Coast 2026 Tour Through Pennsylvania This Week (July 6–12)

The world’s largest operating steam locomotive, Union Pacific No. 4014 “Big Boy,” is still very much on the move across Pennsylvania this week as part of its landmark Coast-to-Coast 2026 tour celebrating America’s 250th anniversary (America250).
After drawing massive crowds for public displays in Philadelphia over the July 4–5 weekend, the 1.2-million-pound articulated giant is now heading west across the Keystone State toward Altoona for another major public appearance before continuing into Ohio and beyond.
Current Status (As of July 6, 2026)
Big Boy 4014 is operating under its own power on Norfolk Southern rails during this eastern leg of the tour. It is accompanied by Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet passenger cars and commemorative locomotives (including units honoring Abraham Lincoln and America250 themes), along with Norfolk Southern heritage power on portions of the route.
Most movements this week are listed as “no public access” on the official schedule, meaning there are no organized public stops or ticketed excursions. However, railfans can often catch safe, legal views from public roads, bridges, and vantage points along the route (always prioritizing safety and respecting private property and active railroad operations).

This Week’s Schedule Highlights (July 6–12, 2026)
Monday, July 6 — Departing the Philadelphia area
Big Boy departs the King of Prussia/Philadelphia region around 9:00 a.m. EDT with no public access. A service stop is scheduled in Lebanon, PA (Lebanon Station area) approximately 1:30–2:15 p.m. EDT. The locomotive continues westward across Pennsylvania.
Tuesday, July 7 — Central Pennsylvania movements
Departing Enola, PA around 9:00 a.m. EDT. Service stops include Lewistown, PA (Roundhouse Road crossing) ~12:45–1:15 p.m. EDT, followed by arrival in Altoona, PA (Railroaders Memorial Museum area) around 5:15 p.m. EDT for a brief stop before a private Norfolk Southern employee event. No public access at organized stops, but line-side viewing opportunities exist for those following safely.
Wednesday, July 8 — Arrival in Altoona area
Positioning and arrival activities in the Altoona region. Public viewing is possible in the evening around the Railroaders Memorial Museum / Amtrak station area as the locomotive arrives ~5:15 p.m. and departs ~5:45 p.m. EDT
Thursday–Friday, July 9–10 — Major public display in Altoona, PA (highlight of the week)
Big Boy will be on public display from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT each day at Norfolk Southern’s Rose Yard in Altoona/Logan Township.
- Free admission — no tickets required.
- Free shuttles from Peoples Natural Gas Field (1000 Park Ave, Altoona) and the west end of Logan Valley Mall (by former Macy’s). ADA-accessible options available.
- No parking at the display site; walk-in access via 8th Ave & 5th St.
- Expect additional displays, including Norfolk Southern America250 heritage locomotives, exhibits, and performances.
This is one of the best opportunities of the week for close-up public viewing.
Saturday, July 11 — Departure from Altoona westward
Big Boy departs Altoona around 9:00 a.m. EDT. It makes a brief stop at the iconic Horseshoe Curve National Historic Site (~9:30 a.m. arrival). This is a ticketed viewing event only and is sold out. Additional service stops are planned in Cresson, PA (Cresson Railroad Park) and Leetsdale, PA before heading toward the Conway, PA
Sunday, July 12 — Into Ohio
Departing the Conway, PA area around 9:00 a.m. EDT. A service stop is scheduled in Struthers, OH (~11:30 a.m.–noon EDT). The locomotive continues its westward journey.
Looking Ahead
After Pennsylvania, Big Boy heads to public display days in Fostoria, Ohio (July 14) and St. Louis, Missouri (July 19), with many more whistle-stops along the way before returning to Cheyenne, Wyoming, on July 29 to conclude the eastern leg of the 2026 Coast-to-Coast tour.
Big Boy 4014’s 2026 tour has already created unforgettable moments across the country, and its time in Pennsylvania — from the July 4th celebrations in Philadelphia through the historic railroading heartland around Altoona and Horseshoe Curve — continues to deliver once-in-a-lifetime sights for steam enthusiasts.
