Illinois's Pumpkin Train Rides

Published: October 10, 2025

By: Adam Burns

Autumn in Illinois is a magical time when the leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, and the crisp fall air brings a refreshing change after the summer heat. One of the quintessential fall activities in the state is taking a pumpkin train ride.

It's a delightful experience that combines the charm of rail travel with the festive spirit of pumpkin season. Currently, only one location in the state hosts pumpkin trains, the Illinois Railway Mueum in Union.

Why Take a Pumpkin Train Ride?

Pumpkin trains offer a unique way to enjoy the fall season, combining the scenic beauty of a train journey with the festive activities of a pumpkin patch visit.

These rides are perfect for families, couples, and anyone looking to soak up the autumn atmosphere. You can expect a blend of entertainment, education, and relaxation, with each train offering its own unique features, such as storytelling, themed characters, or historical insights about the area.

Top Locations

Illinois Railway Museum (Union, IL)

As one of the largest railroad museums in the United States, the Illinois Railway Museum offers an impressive experience for train enthusiasts and families alike.

Each fall, the museum runs a special Pumpkin Train where visitors can enjoy a leisurely ride on unique - and authentic - electrified interurban cars.  Hosted throughout much of October, passengers are taken to the museum’s pumpkin patch, where everyone can select a pumpkin to take home. The museum also features an extensive collection of locomotives and rail cars, making it a day full of exploration and fun.

Tips:

- Allocate extra time to explore the museum’s vast collection.

- Don’t miss the opportunity to photograph the beautifully restored trains against the backdrop of autumn foliage.

More About The IRM

Established in 1953, the museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of rail transport in America. It spans over 100 acres and features more than 450 pieces of historic railway equipment, including steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and streetcars. The museum's extensive collection highlights the evolution of rail travel and its crucial role in the development of the United States.

Visitors to the Illinois Railway Museum can explore numerous exhibits that trace the history of the rail industry, ranging from the early days of steam locomotives to present-day innovations in rail technology. The museum is organized into various indoor and outdoor displays, featuring restored train cars and engines. Additionally, the museum offers interactive experiences where visitors can ride on vintage trains, offering a hands-on glimpse into the bygone era of rail travel.

Educational programs, special events, and guided tours further enhance the visitor experience, making the museum a valuable resource for history enthusiasts and families alike. With its vast collection and commitment to preserving transportation history, the Illinois Railway Museum remains a cherished institution, illuminating the past while inspiring future generations.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit

Most pumpkin trains operate on weekends from late September through October, aligning with peak pumpkin season. For a less crowded experience, aim for early October or a weekday ride if available.

What to Bring

- Clothing: Layered clothing is recommended as temperatures can vary throughout the day.

- Camera: Capture memories of your experience, especially the beautiful fall colors.

- Snacks and Water: While some locations offer concessions, bringing your own ensures you’ll have your favorites on hand.

Other Considerations

- Tickets: Buy tickets online in advance where possible, as these events can sell out quickly.

- Accessibility: Check with each venue about accessibility options if needed.

- Weather: Trips may be weather-dependent, so check forecasts and contact the venue in case of bad weather.

Pumpkin trains offer a charming way to enjoy the fall season while creating lasting memories with family and friends. Whether you're looking for a nostalgic rail experience or a fun-filled day for the kids, Illinois' train rides provide something for everyone. So grab a sweater, hop on a train, and welcome the autumn with a one-of-a-kind pumpkin adventure.
