Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Autumn Leaf Dates & Tips

Published: August 1, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Few Pennsylvania autumn rides are as iconic as the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway out of Jim Thorpe. Trains leave the restored Central Railroad of New Jersey freight station along the Lehigh River and run a narrated trip into Lehigh Gorge State Park country—bridges, river curves, and mountain hardwoods that put on a classic Pocono show each October and early November.

The fall product is marketed as Autumn Leaf service. Weekends and peak color dates fill early; steam appears only on select Reading & Northern public events, not on every Jim Thorpe departure.

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway excursion during the fall

The Leghigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers one of the best ways to see the fall colors throughout Pennsylvania. LGSR photo.

About the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Passenger excursions at Jim Thorpe are operated in connection with Class II regional Reading & Northern (Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern). The tourist product uses historic coaches—some dating to the early 20th century—and open-air cars when available. The corridor follows former CNJ (and connecting) trackage through anthracite-region river valleys into gorge scenery that is difficult to match from a car.

Longer R&N steam rambles and multi-hour products also run from the broader system; this page focuses on the Jim Thorpe Autumn Leaf / gorge foliage experience. Full scenic overview: Reading & Northern Scenic Trains: Complete 2026 Guide.

What the Ride Is Like

Expect narration covering local history and the gorge as the train follows the Lehigh through curves and over bridges. Open-air cars maximize foliage and river views; closed coaches are warmer on chilly November days. Wildlife sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

Jim Thorpe’s walkable downtown—shops, restaurants, and trail access—makes it easy to build a full day around a morning or afternoon train. Parking and foot traffic are heavy on peak foliage weekends; arrive early.

Peak Color Notes

Pocono / Lehigh Gorge hardwoods often peak mid-to-late October, with usable color into early–mid November in many years. Elevation is moderate compared with Cass, West Virginia, so the season can hang later than the highest Allegheny ridges.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Tourist railroad boarding from the historic Jim Thorpe station area
  • Assigned or class-based seating depending on ticket type
  • Open-air cars: dress for wind and cool river air
  • Restrooms and concessions policies vary by consist—check ticket notes

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance tickets for weekend and premium classes; confirm whether any autumn product is walk-up only
  • Base: Jim Thorpe, PA (Pocono region)
  • Pair with: Downtown Jim Thorpe; longer R&N steam/gorge specials when scheduled; multi-state weekends with WMSR or Strasburg
  • Tickets: lgsry.com

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book October weekends as soon as dates are firm
  • Prefer open-air for peak color if the forecast is dry
  • Do not assume steam—check the specific train listing
  • Midweek trains (when offered) are quieter
  • Stay off active tracks and private property for photos
