Minnesota "Ales On Rails" Train Rides
Published: June 6, 2025
By: Adam Burns
Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant cities, and a burgeoning craft beer scene.
Among the unique experiences the state offers are beer tasting train rides, a delightful way to combine the love for railroads with the passion for craft beer.
This article dives into the allure of beer tasting trains in Minnesota, highlighting the experience, the breweries, and the scenic routes that make these rides unforgettable.
The Experience
Beer tasting trains offer a unique blend of history, scenery, and, of course, beer. Onboard these vintage trains, passengers are introduced to a carefully curated selection of local brews. As the train meanders through Minnesota's serene countryside, guests have the opportunity to savor a range of beers, each offering a taste of the state's rich brewing culture.
Often, these train rides include guided tastings led by knowledgeable staff or even local brewmasters. These guides share insights into the brewing process, the unique characteristics of each beer, and food pairing suggestions. The atmosphere is both educational and leisurely, providing the perfect setting for beer enthusiasts to deepen their appreciation for craft beer.
North Shore Scenic Railroad
The North Shore Scenic Railroad is a popular historic railway experience offering scenic rides along Minnesota's magnificent North Shore of Lake Superior. The railroad operates between Duluth and Two Harbors, providing passengers with a nostalgic trip back in time aboard vintage railcars. Managed by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, this tourist attraction beautifully showcases the railroading heritage of the region.
The journey begins at the historic Duluth Union Depot, a landmark in itself, where visitors can also explore the museum's extensive collection of locomotives and rail memorabilia.
The railroad provides an array of excursions, each varying in length and theme. Some of the popular rides include the Two Harbors Turn, which offers a full-day round trip to the charming town of Two Harbors, and the Lester River Excursion, a shorter ride perfect for families and those with limited time.
During the journey, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the Lake Superior shoreline, dense forests, and picturesque small towns. The route follows the same tracks used by iron ore trains over a century ago, highlighting the pivotal role of the railroad in the region's industrial history. Seasonal rides are also a highlight, with stunning fall-color excursions and festive holiday-themed trips drawing crowds from near and far.
The railroad fosters a unique experience where history, natural beauty, and memorable rail travel converge. A friendly and knowledgeable staff, often dressed in period clothing, enhance the experience by sharing anecdotes and insights about the area's history and the significance of rail travel in American development. Meanwhile, special event rides, like "Murder Mystery" trains and themed excursions for children and families, add an extra layer of adventure to the typical journey.
Overall, the railroad is a testament to Minnesota's rich railroad history, offering a unique opportunity to experience the nostalgia of train travel while appreciating the awe-inspiring scenery of the Lake Superior region.
Whether you're a railroad enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique outdoor adventure, the North Shore Scenic Railroad provides an unforgettable journey through time and nature.
The Beer Tasting Train
The railroad hosts local craft breweries by train on a single date in October. The 2 1/2 hour excursion and the railroad states the following local/regional breweries will be featured (subject to change): "Castle Danger, Bent Paddle, Blacklist, Modist, Surly, Summit, New Belgium, Duluth Cider, Shiner, Earth Rider, Sierra Nevada, and Fulton."
Final Thoughts
Beer tasting trains offer a remarkable fusion of unique experiences—combining the nostalgia of rail travel, the beauty of Minnesota's landscapes, and the dynamic flavors of craft beer. For enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike, these excursions provide an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the state's vibrant brewing culture in a setting that’s both historical and scenic.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, stepping aboard one of these beer tasting trains is sure to be a memorable adventure, filled with laughter, learning, and perhaps even a new favorite beer. So raise your glass, enjoy the ride, and toast to the rich tapestry of Minnesota's brewing industry on your next rail-bound journey.
