GE's "More Power to America Special": A Rolling Showcase of Electrical Innovation (1950-1951)

Published: June 6, 2026

By: Adam Burns

In the post-World War II era, America was booming. Industry was expanding, cities were growing, and electricity was becoming the lifeblood of modern productivity. General Electric (GE), already a titan in electrical manufacturing, launched one of its most ambitious promotional efforts: the "More Power to America Special" train. This wasn't just another corporate exhibit—it was a 10-car (plus support cars) mobile showcase designed to demonstrate how GE's electrical technologies could transform American industry, infrastructure, and daily life.

Running from April 1950 through much of 1951, the train crisscrossed the United States, covering over 28,000 miles and visiting approximately 160 cities and towns in 46 states. It hosted more than 250,000 visitors, primarily industrial designers, engineers, business leaders, and civic officials invited to explore GE's latest innovations. The slogan "More Than 2000 Ideas for a More Productive America" captured its ambitious scope.

GE's "More Power to America" campaign had roots in the mid-1940s, promoting the broader adoption of electrical power to boost postwar productivity. The special train was a natural extension of this, serving as a high-visibility marketing and educational tool for GE's Apparatus Department. It followed in the footsteps of other famous exhibition trains, such as the 1947 Freedom Train (which also featured striking paint by the same designer, Chester J. Mack), and positioned GE as a leader in the electrical age, much like General Motors' "Train of Tomorrow."

The train highlighted GE's comprehensive range of products for power generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial utilization. Exhibits were organized into 11 distinct sections across the 10 cars: Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution; Drives & Controls; Materials Handling; Welding; Industrial Heating; Renewal Parts; Industrial Lighting; Components for Industry; Measurements; Civic Improvements; and National Security. Over 2,000 GE products and concepts were on display, from heavy industrial equipment to cutting-edge components.

At a time when many Americans were still adjusting to peacetime prosperity, the train emphasized practical applications: how electricity could power factories more efficiently, improve infrastructure, enhance national defense (important in the early Cold War), and support civic projects like better lighting and public facilities. Displays included working models, demonstrations, and interactive elements showcasing everything from jet engines and "mechanical hands" to meters, instruments, and advanced electrical systems.

The Locomotives: Alco PA-2s

Powering this impressive consist were a pair of sleek Alco (American Locomotive Company) PA-2/PB-2s, numbered 8375A and 8375B. Built in March 1950 (builder's numbers 75790 and 75789, respectively), these units were specifically prepared for the tour. The A unit and B unit provided a combined high-horsepower, passenger-style diesel-electric draw that perfectly complemented the train's modern image.

These locomotives were painted in a striking red-and-stainless scheme designed by Chester J. Mack, featuring bold GE branding. They weren't just motive power; they were part of the exhibit, showcasing GE's involvement in locomotive technology (even though Alco built the mechanicals, GE contributed electrical systems). After the tour concluded, the units were sold to the New York Central Railroad, becoming NYC 4212 (PA) and 4304 (PB) in August 1951.

Equipment Roster: The Exhibit Cars and Support Consist

The heart of the train consisted of 10 stainless steel exhibit cars, built in 1950 by Pullman to Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (CRI&P) standards but delivered as bare shells without finished interiors. GE then outfitted them with the elaborate displays. These cars were numbered 352 through 361 for the tour (with "GENERAL ELECTRIC" lettering prominently displayed). After the tour, the Rock Island purchased and completed them as 72-seat chair cars.

Here's the detailed roster of the exhibit cars (based on historical records):

  • 352: Later CRI&P 352 Lake Michigan. Rebuilt in 1953 as business car 101 Lake Michigan (renamed The Rock in 1975). Eventually went to Montana Rail Link as MRL 101 Silver Cloud.
  • 353: CRI&P 353 Englewood
  • 354: CRI&P 354 Chicago. Later Penn Central 3160, Amtrak 7256, and saw service with Pittsburgh & Shawmut RR and Pennsylvania Transportation Museum (as Amtrak private car 800478).
  • 355: CRI&P 355 Lake of the Woods
  • 356: CRI&P 356 Tucumcari
  • 357: CRI&P 357 Enid
  • 358: CRI&P 358 Gulf of Mexico
  • 359: CRI&P 359 Grinnell
  • 360: CRI&P 360 Dalhart
  • 361: CRI&P 361 Spirit Lake

These fluted, lightweight cars were innovative in their own right. Many featured underfloor electrical generators for independent power supply to the exhibits and air conditioning—a relatively new approach that reduced reliance on head-end power. For public displays, GE often spotted five cars on each of two parallel tracks, connected by bridges to create a continuous walking circuit for visitors.

Supporting the exhibit cars were additional utility cars for the roughly 20 staff members (engineers, technicians, and hosts) who traveled with the train:

  • A power car (baggage-dormitory style) equipped with four electrical generators to power exhibits, air conditioning, and other needs.
  • A dining car for staff meals.
  • Two sleeping cars (likely Pullman sleepers) for accommodations.

This brought the total consist to around 13-15 cars at times, though GE typically referred to it as the "10-car train." The support cars received less public attention but were essential for the long tour.

Life on the Road and Impact

Operating the train was a massive logistical undertaking. Staff included retired GE engineers brought back for their expertise. The train stopped at major industrial centers and rail hubs, where local dignitaries and professionals toured the exhibits. It generated significant positive publicity and goodwill for GE while educating visitors on the transformative potential of electricity in everything from manufacturing to national security.

The tour demonstrated the postwar optimism in American industry and railroading. Diesel power was ascendant, stainless steel passenger cars symbolized modernity, and electricity promised greater efficiency and progress. GE's investment paid off in strengthened customer relationships and brand visibility.

Legacy

While the physical train was disbanded after 1951, its cars lived on in revenue service on the Rock Island and beyond. Some, like car 352 and 354, had notable second (and third) lives in business and private car service. The Alco PAs continued in mainline passenger duty on the NYC.

Today, the "More Power to America Special" is remembered fondly by railroad historians and GE enthusiasts as a creative pinnacle of corporate exhibition trains. It exemplified an era when big companies used spectacular rail tours to connect directly with the public and industry. In a world increasingly powered by electricity, GE's rolling showcase helped pave the way for the electrified future.
