Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service is one of the most popular and frequently used routes in the United States.

Stretching from Boston, Massachusetts, to Norfolk, Virginia, with additional routes to Springfield, Massachusetts, and Richmond as well as Roanoke, Virginia, the Northeast Regional connects major cities along the Eastern Seaboard.

This guide provides all the pertinent and relevant information you need for a seamless travel experience on the Northeast Regional.

Overview

Running multiple times daily, the Northeast Regional offers a convenient and efficient way to travel between key cities. The route covers approximately 682 miles (Boston-Roanoke) and serves 55h commuting and leisurely travel.

**Key Stops:**

1. **Boston, MA (South Station and Back Bay Station):** Key starting points in New England.

2. **Providence, RI:** Known for its historic landscapes and the prestigious Brown University.

3. **New Haven, CT:** Home to Yale University.

4. **New York, NY (Penn Station):** A major hub offering numerous connections and attractions.

5. **Newark, NJ (Penn Station and Metropark):** Convenient for access to Newark Liberty International Airport.

6. **Philadelphia, PA (30th Street Station):** Known for its historical significance and vibrant cultural scene.

7. **Wilmington, DE:** A stop rich in early American history.

8. **Baltimore, MD (Penn Station and BWI Airport):** Offers connections to Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Booking and Seating Options

**Booking Options:**

- **Mobile App:** Amtrak’s app is available for booking tickets, checking schedules, and receiving real-time updates.

- **Telephone:** Reservations can be made by calling Amtrak customer service.

- **Station Kiosks:** Ticket kiosks are available at major stations along the route for in-person transactions.

- **Travel Agents:** Tickets can also be booked through authorized travel agents.

**Seating Options:**

- **Coach Class:** Offers comfortable, reclining seats with ample legroom and overhead storage. Each seat comes equipped with a reading light and power outlets. Complimentary WiFi is available.

- **Business Class:** Features extra legroom, wider seats, and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. Additionally, Business Class customers receive a 25% bonus on Amtrak Guest Rewards points.

**Luggage Services:**

- **Carry-On Luggage:** Passengers are allowed two personal items and two carry-on bags free of charge.  Must weigh 25 lbs (12 kg) or less and measure 14 x 11 x 7 inches or less, and must fit under the seat.

- **Checked Luggage:** Available at select stations, allowing for up to two checked bags without an additional charge.

**Connecting Services:** Transfers are available for the MARC train to Washington D.C. and the Light Rail to BWI Airport.

Nearby Attractions and Destinations

**Tips:** Purchase tickets in advance for popular attractions, and consider using public transit or Amtrak’s own “See NY by Rail” for day trips.
