Norfolk Southern America 250 Locomotive 2026: "Lady Liberty"

Published: July 2, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Norfolk Southern (NS) unveiled its America’s 250 locomotive series on May 20, 2026, as a major tribute to the United States’ 250th anniversary (the Semiquincentennial). The six custom-painted locomotives celebrate enduring American icons, the contributions of generations of railroaders, and the vital role railroads have played in connecting communities, powering industry, and moving the nation forward for nearly two centuries.  SD70ACe #2026, which is featured below, boasts a handsome blue livery and an illustration of the Statue of Liberty.

The series includes three EMD/Progress Rail units (Nos. 1776, 2026, and 250) and three Wabtec/General Electric units (Nos. 8096, 8118, and 8143). Here are their individual themes and inspirations:

  • No. 1776 – The Bell: Honors the Liberty Bell and the role of NS predecessor Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), which transported the bell across the country for over 30 years, allowing millions of Americans to experience this symbol of independence firsthand.
  • No. 2026 – The Lady Liberty: Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, celebrating freedom, welcome, possibility, and the values that have guided railroaders while connecting communities across America.
  • No. 250 – The Freedom: Features a bald eagle in flight, symbolizing strength, resolve, independence, determination, and the American spirit that has weathered challenges for 250 years.
  • No. 8096 – The Soaring: Depicts an eagle rendered in stars and stripes, tributing American ambition, vision, strength, and independence—the drive to reach higher and keep moving forward.
  • No. 8118 – The Stars & Stripes: Carries the “America 250” mark and pays tribute to 250 years of effort, growth, and determination by the people who built and sustained the nation.
  • No. 8143 – The Patriot: Showcases NS’s Patriotic Thoroughbred icon, connecting the grit, pride, and reliability of today’s railroaders (working 24/7) to America’s ongoing story of strength and resolve.

Specifications and Technical Background

These are modern heavy-haul diesel-electric road locomotives designed for freight service across NS’s network. They fall into two main families:EMD SD70ACe (Nos. 1776, 2026, 250)

  • Builder: Progress Rail (EMD) in Muncie, Indiana
  • Horsepower: 4,300 hp traction
  • Engine: 16-cylinder EMD 710-series (e.g., 710G3C-T2)
  • Traction: AC (alternating current) with six AC traction motors
  • Configuration: C-C (six axles)
  • Starting Tractive Effort: Approximately 189,000 lbs
  • Continuous Tractive Effort: Approximately 155,000–157,000 lbs
  • Weight: ~408,000 lbs
  • Top Speed: 70 mph
  • Fuel Capacity: Typically ~4,900 gallons
  • Length: Approximately 74 ft 3 in

One example (No. 250) is reported as the former NS 1184, an SD70ACe.

GE/Wabtec ES44AC (Nos. 8096, 8118, 8143)

  • Builder: Wabtec (GE) in Erie, Pennsylvania
  • Horsepower: 4,400 hp
  • Engine: GEVO-12 (12-cylinder)
  • Traction: AC with six AC traction motors
  • Configuration: C-C (six axles)
  • Starting Tractive Effort: 183,000 lbs
  • Continuous Tractive Effort: 166,000 lbs
  • Weight: Approximately 416,000–432,000 lbs
  • Top Speed: 70 mph
  • Fuel Capacity: Typically 5,000 gallons
  • Length: Approximately 73 ft 2 in

These specifications make both types powerful, efficient workhorses well-suited for NS’s diverse freight operations (coal, intermodal, merchandise, etc.). The units were customized with special paint schemes at Juniata, requiring hundreds of labor hours per locomotive.

Background and Context

Railroads have been central to American history since the early 19th century—transporting goods, people, and national symbols (such as the Liberty Bell via the PRR). NS’s series builds on this legacy while honoring the “Thoroughbred” spirit of its workforce.

The locomotives were unveiled alongside plans for a special East Coast tour featuring Union Pacific’s massive Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive and historic business cars (including the restored Pullman Marco Polo, once used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt). Public display stops occurred in summer 2026 at locations including Buffalo (NY), Scranton and Philadelphia and Altoona (PA), and Fostoria (OH).

Limited-edition merchandise (apparel, collectibles, etc.) was also released to commemorate the series.

Final Thoughts

Norfolk Southern’s America’s 250 series stands as a rolling tribute to 250 years of American resilience, innovation, and unity—embodied in powerful locomotives built, painted, and operated by American hands. Whether you spot No. 250’s soaring eagle, No. 2026’s Statue of Liberty motif, or any of the others in regular freight service or on tour, these units serve as proud ambassadors of railroading’s ongoing role in the nation’s story.

For the latest updates, photos, or tour information, check Norfolk Southern’s official channels (norfolksouthern.com or their social media). These locomotives are a highlight of the 2026 celebrations and a fitting way to mark America’s milestone on the rails.
