Norfolk Southern Unveils America250 Locomotive Series: Celebrating 250 Years of American Spirit on the Rails

Norfolk Southern has joined that party and will soon be rolling out its own new commemorative series to mark America’s 250th anniversary (the nation’s Semiquincentennial in 2026). Dubbed the America250 locomotive series, these six specially designed and painted locomotives pay tribute to the people, symbols, and railroad legacy that have shaped the United States. Unveiled today, May 20, 2026, the series highlights rail’s enduring role in connecting communities, powering industries, and strengthening supply chains—while honoring the railroaders who keep the nation moving.

The locomotives were built entirely in the United States: Nos. 1776, 2026, and 250 at Progress Rail’s facility in Muncie, Indiana (EMD models), and Nos. 8096, 8118, and 8143 at Wabtec’s plant in Erie, Pennsylvania (GE models). They were painted at Norfolk Southern’s Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where skilled craftspeople brought each design to life with pride and precision.

This summer, the America250 units will headline rolling celebrations across the Norfolk Southern network. Expect public and employee events featuring a historic consist that includes restored business cars—like the Pullman car Marco Polo once used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt—alongside Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive on portions of the East Coast tour.

“These locomotives represent more than American symbols and milestones. They reflect the people and the work behind them,” said John Orr, Norfolk Southern Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Across our railroad, and especially with the skilled teams at Juniata, our railroaders will bring this series to life with craftsmanship, pride, and a deep sense of responsibility. This is a historic moment for our country, and we’re proud to recognize it through this commemorative series.”

Locomotive Series

No. 1776 – “The Bell”

This unit honors the Liberty Bell, one of America’s most iconic symbols of independence. For more than 30 years, Norfolk Southern’s predecessor, the Pennsylvania Railroad, transported the bell across the country by rail, bringing the powerful emblem of freedom to millions of Americans. The design evokes that historic journey, mile by mile, as rail once again carries liberty forward.

No. 2026 – “The Lady Liberty”

Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, this locomotive celebrates freedom, welcome, and possibility. It embodies the spirit that has guided generations of railroaders and helped knit communities together across the nation. The design captures the statue’s enduring message of hope and opportunity.

No. 250 – “The Freedom”

Featuring a majestic bald eagle in flight, this engine symbolizes the strength, resolve, and independence that have propelled America through 250 years—and will carry it forward. The eagle represents a nation built on hard work and perseverance, always ready to rise to new challenges.

No. 8118 – “The Stars & Stripes”

This locomotive proudly carries the official America250 mark and pays direct tribute to the 250-year milestone. It represents two and a half centuries of effort, growth, and determination by the people who built and sustained the country. Rail continues to carry that story into the future.

No. 8096 – “The Soaring”

An eagle rendered in stars-and-stripes motifs takes center stage here, honoring American ambition and vision. Long a symbol of strength and independence, the eagle reflects a country that reaches higher, pushes farther, and keeps advancing—one mile at a time.

No. 8143 – “The Patriot”

Marked with Norfolk Southern’s own Patriotic Thoroughbred icon, this unit connects the grit and pride of today’s railroaders to America’s broader story. It honors the strength, reliability, and 24/7 resolve of the men and women who keep freight moving across the network—the Thoroughbred spirit in action.

As Tim Lasure, a Carman at Juniata Locomotive Shop, put it: “We take pride in every engine that comes through here—that’s just how we do the job. These units are no different, but it does mean a little more. You’ve got a whole crew putting their hands on them, making sure it’s right, because it’s going to represent something bigger. These are about America’s 250, our railroad, and the work we do every day. When they roll out, we know we did it right, and we did it together.”

The America250 series is more than eye-catching paint—it’s a rolling salute to the shared history of American railroads and the nation they helped build.
