Ohio Oktoberfest Train Rides

Published: September 20, 2025

By: Adam Burns

When autumn paints Ohio in shades of gold and crimson, heritage railroads across the state bring an extra layer of fun to the season: Oktoberfest-themed trains.

These rides blend crisp fall scenery with classic German flavors—think Märzens and festbiers, soft pretzels, brats, and sometimes live polka—served on board vintage coaches. Whether you’re a craft beer lover, a railfan, or just looking for a novel way to celebrate fall, Oktoberfest train rides in Ohio deliver a memorable outing.

Here’s a detailed guide to help you plan, including where to look for Oktoberfest-themed departures, how these experiences usually work, and practical tips to make the most of your ride.

Because these events can change year to year, always check each railroad’s current calendar. The following railroads have offered beer-tasting or Oktoberfest-style trains in past seasons, or commonly run special event rides that may include fall beer themes:

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Running through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, CVSR is known for scenic foliage runs and popular beverage-tasting trains, which have included fall beer themes in some years. Expect a curated lineup of seasonal styles—often Oktoberfest and festbier releases—paired with small bites. The route’s river views and wooded corridors make it a standout for leaf-peeping.

Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad

Departing from the charming town of Lebanon, LM&M frequently offers special event trains throughout the year. During the fall festival season, the host "The Munich Express" in honor of Oktoberfest.

Settle in for a 1 hour and 15 minute journey featuring lively German music played throughout the train, plus Oktoberfest-themed snacks and beverages.

According ot the railroad your ticket includes two German-style beers, warm pretzels with beer cheese dip, and a light pairing of meats and mixed nuts. Want a little more? Visit our Queen City Tavern Car to purchase additional drinks and snacks.

Please note: this is a 21+ experience. All passengers must present a valid ID before departure.

What an Oktoberfest Train Typically Includes

Every operator is different, but here’s what you can usually expect:

Beer tastings: Flights of seasonal beers—often Märzens, festbiers, and a mix of Ohio craft selections—served in sample pours. Some trains feature a host or brewer who introduces each beer.

Oktoberfest fare: Snacks or small plates like pretzels with mustard, bratwurst bites, cheeses, or German potato salad. Full dinner trains offer more substantial courses.

Entertainment: From curated playlists to live polka, the vibe is festive and social. Some rides include take-home tasting cards or souvenir glasses.

Scenic rails: Fall foliage is the star. The routes highlight valleys, rivers, and woodlands at peak color, typically late September through mid-October (timing varies by weather and region).

How to Plan and Book

Start early: Oktoberfest and fall foliage trains sell out quickly, especially on peak-color weekends. Join the railroad’s email list and set calendar reminders for when tickets go live.

Confirm the details: Read the event page closely. Look for what’s included (number of pours, food type, souvenir items), duration (usually 1.5–3 hours), and seating type (table, coach, or lounge).

Age and ID: Most beer-themed trains are 21+ with valid ID required at boarding. Some railroads will allow non-drinking companions but require 21+ for the car or entire train—check the rules.

Transportation plan: Consider ride-hailing or a designated driver. Many depots are in small towns or park settings where parking is easy, but you’ll want a safe ride home.

Dress for the season: Even heated cars cool at doors and vestibules. Layers are smart for platform waits and photo stops. Dirndls and lederhosen are welcome if you’re leaning into the theme.

Final Thoughts

Oktoberfest train rides blend the best of fall: colorful scenery, convivial tasting experiences, and the romance of vintage rail travel. While details vary by operator and season, the core appeal is the same—slowing down, savoring the moment, and toasting autumn from a rolling, historic vantage point.

With a little advance planning, you can snag seats on a festive departure, pair it with a local Oktoberfest or hike, and create a tradition worth repeating every year.

If you need specific dates, menus, or booking links for this season, please check the current schedules with each railroad
