Published: October 15, 2025
By: Adam Burns
As the crisp autumn air settles in and the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, Ohio transforms into a picturesque fall wonderland. A quintessential activity to embrace the season is embarking on a pumpkin train ride.
These family-friendly excursions offer a delightful combination of scenic train journeys, immersive autumn experiences, and the excitement of choosing the perfect pumpkin. Currently, only the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad offers these popular rides in Ohio.
Locations
Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad
What to Expect:
The Pumpkin Express departs from the historic Lebanon station and transports passengers through the scenic Warren County countryside.
This trip is a bit unique in that the train ride travels to the Lebanon Sports complex for roughly 45 minutes where guests and kids can participate in activities such as face painting, balloon twisting, small pumpkins, inflatables, and more.
Tips
Check the schedule for special themed rides that may occur in conjunction with the pumpkin train.
Allow extra time to explore the charming city of Lebanon, filled with antique shops and cozy cafes.
More About The Railroad
The railroad operates along a 4.5-mile stretch of track running between Lebanon and Hageman Junction. The line was built as the narrow-gauge Cincinnati, Lebanon & Northern Railway and later became part of the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad.
The railroad was once a bustling route vital for transporting goods and passengers throughout the region. Today, it serves as a recreational and educational asset, inviting guests to step back in time.
One of the hallmarks of the LM&M is its commitment to preserving and showcasing the history of American railroading. The vintage train consists of historic coaches and freight cars, all of which have been meticulously restored to reflect the early to mid-20th century. Passengers can enjoy the rhythmic clatter and leisurely pace typical of rail travel from a bygone era while taking in the scenic vistas of rural Ohio.
The railroad offers a variety of themed excursions throughout the year to appeal to a broad audience. These include seasonal rides such as the "North Pole Express" during the holiday season, which offers a magical Christmas experience complete with hot cocoa, cookies, and a visit from Santa Claus. Themed rides are designed to be family-friendly, providing entertainment and an interactive experience for children and adults alike.
Additionally, the LM&M is often involved in special events such as wine and cheese tasting excursions for adults, murder mystery dinner trains, and educational trips centered around historical reenactments or local wildlife and scenery. These events expand the cultural and recreational offerings of the railroad, making it a versatile attraction in the region.
Working with a dedicated team of volunteers and staff, the LM&M also focuses on educational outreach. It welcomes school groups and community organizations, offering programs that highlight the history and mechanics of train travel, as well as the impact of the railroad industry on the development of the United States. This educational component is designed to preserve knowledge and interest in railroading for future generations.
In addition to its recreational operations, the tailroad contributes to local tourism and economic development. It draws visitors from around Ohio and beyond, providing a boost to local businesses in Lebanon and surrounding areas. The railroad's collaboration with local shops, restaurants, and hotels helps create a comprehensive tourism experience that benefits the community economically.
The LM&M more than just a nostalgic train ride; it is an intersection of history, education, recreation, and community engagement. By offering a myriad of excursions and events, the railroad continues to be a beloved and active part of southwestern Ohio's cultural landscape, providing enjoyment and educational opportunities for people of all ages.
Planning Your Visit
Best Time to Go
Pumpkin trains generally run from late September through October. Weekends are typically the most crowded, so consider a weekday visit if your schedule allows. Ohio’s fall temperatures can vary, so check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the season.
What to Bring
Camera/Phone: Capture memories of your family and the stunning fall landscapes.
Comfortable Shoes: You may want to explore nearby trails or towns.
Blanket or Lap Cover: The warmth can make outdoor viewing more comfortable.
Final Thoughts
Pumpkin trains offer an enchanting and educational autumn experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re a local or planning a visit to the Buckeye State, these train excursions provide a unique way to celebrate the season. So grab your scarf, bring the family, and hop aboard for an autumn adventure you won’t soon forget.
