Beginning in June 2026, #1776 leads most trains departing from Fort Bragg. This includes the popular Pudding Creek Express, the upscale Presidential Class experience aboard the Redwood, and scenic rides to Glen Blair Bar. It will continue hauling tourist excursions through the majestic redwood forests, blending history, scenery, and national pride.
Background on the Skunk Train and California Western Railroad
The California Western Railroad (reporting mark CWR), affectionately known as the Skunk Train, is a Class III common carrier and heritage railroad in Mendocino County’s redwood forests. It began operations in 1885 as a logging railroad, hauling redwood logs from the rugged backcountry to coastal sawmills and later transporting finished lumber to the national rail network. Passenger service was added over time.
In 1925, the railroad earned its iconic “Skunk” nickname from the distinctive (and pungent) combination of gasoline-powered motorcar fumes and heating oil exhaust from early self-propelled cars. Today, under Mendocino Railway ownership (since acquiring assets in 2004), it operates year-round freight, passenger, and excursion trains. It has earned acclaim as one of North America’s most spectacular train trips (per The New York Times) and one of the 10 Best Scenic Train Rides in the Nation (USA Today 10Best).
The line runs approximately 40 miles between Fort Bragg on the coast and Willits, offering passengers unforgettable journeys through towering redwoods, over bridges, and along scenic creeks and rivers.

The locomotive is not a brand-new build but a repainted and renumbered veteran of the fleet—specifically, a former Southern Pacific EMD GP9 (a classic 1,750-horsepower road-switcher diesel).
- Built: 1955 by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors as Texas & New Orleans/SP #416, and was later numbered as Southern Pacific #3427 .
- Rebuild/Modifications: Later rebuilt or modified in the GP9E program (common for SP units, sometimes involving chop nose modifications for improved crew visibility in switching and road service).
- Acquisition and Service on CWR: It joined the California Western Railroad fleet and operated for years as No. 65. It was a reliable workhorse for both freight and tourist passenger trains on the Skunk Train route.
