Overview
The Texas State Railroad is a historical and scenic railway located in East Texas, connecting the cities of Rusk and Palestine. Established in 1881 by the Texas State Penitentiary, the line originally served to transport materials for the construction of Texas's first iron foundry. Today, the railroad is preserved as a heritage railroad and offers a unique glimpse into the bygone era of steam train travel.
Spanning approximately 25 miles, the Texas State Railroad runs through the picturesque Piney Woods, offering a journey filled with beautiful landscapes, dense forests, and occasional glimpses of local wildlife. The railroad features meticulously restored vintage steam and diesel locomotives, along with historic passenger cars that enhance the nostalgic experience.
Beyond the train rides, the Texas State Railroad offers a variety of events and themed excursions throughout the year, including holiday-themed rides and special dinners, making it a popular attraction for families, history buffs, and train enthusiasts alike. Passengers can enjoy either open-air coach seating or more luxurious first-class accommodations.
Managed as a state park until 2007, the railroad is now privately operated, ensuring the preservation of its rich history and charm while contributing to cultural tourism in the region. The Texas State Railroad remains a cherished link to the past, showcasing the timeless allure of rail travel.

Essential Tips
Weather-Appropriate Attire: Springtime in Texas can be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from cool to warm. Dress in layers to ensure comfort throughout the day.
Camera for Capturing Memories: Make sure to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the striking landscapes and memorable moments with the Easter Bunny.
Pack Snacks and Water: Some train rides may not offer extensive dining options, so having a small snack or bottled water handy can enhance the experience.
Arrival Time: Arrive at the station well in advance of departure to allow time for parking, check-in, and boarding.
