Texas & Pacific Railway Timetables (September, 1937)

Featured here is the Texas & Pacific's timetables and system map from the September, 1937 edition of the "Official Guide Of The Railways." The T&P was chartered by Congress on March 3, 1871, as the Texas Pacific Railroad Company to build a southern transcontinental line from Marshall, Texas, to San Diego, California—the only Texas railroad with a federal charter.
Renamed in 1872, it opened its first segments in 1873: Longview to Dallas and Marshall to Texarkana. The Panic of 1873 halted westward progress until financier Jay Gould acquired control in 1879. Tracklaying resumed from Fort Worth in 1880 and reached Sierra Blanca by December 1881, connecting with the Southern Pacific near El Paso—but never advancing to the Pacific.
The T&P expanded across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, spurring West Texas settlement (including Abilene) and later hauling booming oil traffic. Missouri Pacific gained control in the 1920s and fully merged the T&P on October 15, 1976.
