All Aboard the Independence Day Flyer: Celebrating America’s 250th with a Scenic Train Ride to Burlington’s Fireworks

Every Independence Day, Vermonters and visitors flock to Burlington’s scenic Waterfront Park for a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Champlain. But in 2026—the nation’s 250th anniversary—there’s a charming, traffic-free way to join the celebration: the Independence Day Flyer, a festive round-trip train excursion operated by the Green Mountain Railroad (part of the Vermont Rail System’s passenger services).

This special holiday train lets passengers skip the parking hassles and highway crowds, relaxing in vintage-style railcars while enjoying the rolling Champlain Valley countryside en route to the fireworks. It’s a nostalgic throwback to classic rail travel, perfect for families, couples, and anyone who loves a patriotic adventure on the rails.
