Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Dates, 2-Hour & 4-Hour Tours

Published: August 1, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Few southern Appalachian tourist railroads market autumn as clearly as the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. From downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia, diesel-powered trains follow the Toccoa River north toward the Georgia–Tennessee state line—rolling hills, hardwood forest, and small-town river country that put on a strong color show from late September into early November.

For 2026 the railroad packages dedicated Fall Rides as both a short express and a longer layover trip. Peak weekends sell out early.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Fall Foliage Train

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and upstate Georgia offers one of the best fall foliage experiences throughout the South, hosting trips through the breathtaking southern Appalachian Mountains. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway photo.

About the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The railroad operates out of Fannin County in the North Georgia mountains, roughly 90 minutes north of Atlanta, on former Louisville & Nashville (later CSX) trackage tied to the copper-mining and timber economy of the twin towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Today it is a pure heritage excursion product with open-air and enclosed coaches and a narrated 26-mile round trip.

Express vs. Extended Tour

  • 2-Hour Express: Continuous round trip, no layover—best if you want more time in downtown Blue Ridge or are traveling with younger children.
  • 4-Hour Extended: Same rail mileage plus roughly a two-hour layover at McCaysville / Copperhill for lunch, shopping, and photos.

Premier Car (adults 18+) adds reclining seats, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, and—on 4-hour trips—a catered snack and related amenities; alcohol available for purchase. Full Premier amenities apply to the 4-hour product per railroad rules.

Peak Color Notes

North Georgia mountain hardwoods usually peak later than New England. Mid-to-late October is often the sweet spot on this corridor, with usable color into early November in many years.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Narration of local history; family-oriented tourist pace
  • Restrooms available during the trip
  • Open-air cars: cool mornings and strong midday sun both possible—layers help
  • ADA service animals per railroad rules; accessible coach booked by phone (877-413-8724 as published)

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Online via the fall rides page; October weekends sell out
  • Base: Downtown Blue Ridge—arrive early for parking on peak days
  • Pair with: Main Street shops and restaurants; mountain itineraries toward North Carolina or Cherokee National Forest

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book October weekends and Premier seats early
  • Open-air for maximum foliage views if weather allows
  • 4-hour layover if you want lunch without driving the state-line strip separately
  • 2-hour Express if downtown Blue Ridge is the main destination
