About Cass Scenic Railroad

Cass is a restored company town and state park setting where logging-railroad Shays (and related geared power) climb grades historically in the 8–11% range—far steeper than typical main-line railroading. Trains depart the rebuilt depot for destinations such as Whittaker Station (shorter climb) and Bald Knob (the long haul toward the second-highest point in West Virginia). Open cars are common; dress for wind and cool temperatures.

What the Ride Is Like

Cass is not a gentle valley hop. You climb logging-railroad grades through hardwood forest that turns early at elevation. Open cars put you in the weather and the sound of the Shays; closed cars (on some products elsewhere in the system) trade atmosphere for comfort. Bald Knob is the full experience; Whittaker is shorter but still a real mountain climb with switchback heritage on the old logging profile.

The company town—shops, lodging, and park setting—rewards an overnight stay, especially in peak foliage.

Peak Color Notes

Treat elevation as destiny. Cass and high Cheat Mountain country can peak by mid-to-late September while lower valleys still show mixed green. Do not wait until early November for the highest ridges. Mid-to-late October remains excellent on many Mountain Rail products at slightly lower elevations.
