North Carolina Polar Express Train Rides: A Complete Guide
Published: March 14, 2025
By: Adam Burns
North Carolina, known for its picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage, offers magical experiences during the holiday season. One unforgettable event is The Polar Express train ride, inspired by the beloved book and movie.
The are currently two locations across the state hosting this popular trip, the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in the western mountains at Bryson City.
This guide will introduce you to the enchanting adventure of the Polar Express in the Tarheel State, highlighting what to expect, and how to prepare for this magical journey.
Introduction to The Polar Express Experience
The Polar Express aims to recreate the magical journey to the North Pole, as depicted in Chris Van Allsburg's classic children’s book. This experience is designed for families and individuals who want to immerse themselves in the spirit of Christmas, offering activities and entertainment that mirror the story.
Onboard Experience
Once you board, the adventure to the North Pole begins! The ambiance is set with holiday music, cheerful staff dressed as characters, and decorations that transform the train into a scene from the story.
The Journey
During the ride, passengers can expect a host of activities:
- Hot Chocolate and Cookies: Early in the journey, you’ll be served delicious hot chocolate and cookies, similar to the scene in the book and film.
- Reading of the Polar Express: As the train rolls through North Carolina’s picturesque landscapes, staff will read the memorable story of The Polar Express, captivating guests of all ages.
- Santa’s Visit: The highlight for many aboard is the visit from Santa Claus, who boards the train to greet each child and present them with a special gift—a silver sleigh bell, reminiscent of the book's narrative.
Entertainment
Throughout the journey, expect a variety of entertainment options:
- Singing and Dancing: The staff often engage passengers in joyful sing-alongs and festive dances.
- Interaction with Characters: Characters from the story, such as the Conductor, mingle with passengers to enhance the storytelling experience.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (Bryson City): One of the nation's top tourist railroads can be found in Bryson City, North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has been a top attraction within the state's western mountains since it formally launched in 1988.
It utilizes a section of the Southern Railway's historic Murphy Branch which ran 123.1 miles from Asheville to rural Murphy where a connection was established with the Louisville & Nashville.
The line's rugged profile and beautiful topography draws in thousands annually, thanks in part to its relatively close proximity to Asheville (about an hour away). The GSMR currently operates the Bryson City-Nantahala segment, 30.7 miles.
The company also features one of the nation's premier versions of The Polar Express during November and December.
The railroad offers four different levels of service including First Class, Premium Crown Class, Crown Class, and Coach. Whichever you choose, the accommodations are top notch; few other places operate such a superb fleet of passenger cars.
North Carolina Transportation Museum (Spencer): The best railroad museum in the Tarheel State and one of the best in the nation, the NCTM was born thanks to a generous donation by the Southern Railway.
In 1977 it handed over four acres of its Spencer Shops complex (including three buildings) to North Carolina (another donation occurred in 1979 when more buildings and structures were donated).
Unlike some, the state has fully embraced this gift, turning it into a major tourist attraction and historical center. Visitors can learn about the railroad's impact on North Carolina and also take a train ride behind restored steam and diesel locomotives.
NCTM's collection is primarily focused on those systems which served the state. While there are several railroad pieces, including a number from the Southern Railway, their collection also includes trolleys, planes, and historic vehicles.
The museum hosts several special events throughout the year, including official The Polar Express trips from mid-November through December.
If you are considering a visit to a railroad museum soon or riding an excursion the NCTM offers a wonderful experience.
The Polar Express is a magical journey that captures the essence of the holiday season. It combines the charm of a classic story with the beauty of the North Carolina landscape, creating memories that families and individuals will cherish for years to come.
With careful planning and a spirit of adventure, your trip to the North Pole aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad can become a treasured tradition in your holiday celebrations.
Whether you're a local resident or traveling from afar, the Polar Express train ride offers an enchanting holiday experience for everyone. Embrace the magic, believe in the spirit of Christmas, and enjoy your memorable journey!
