Seaboard Coast Line Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 15, 2026

By: Adam Burns

On July 1, 1967 the Seaboard Coast Line inherited two diesel fleets and then kept buying. The Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line numbers that crossed the merger are indexed below. Builder serials for those locomotives stay on those two rosters. Both of those rosters count each railroad’s all-time diesels, including locomotives retired before the merger. The index here is the SCL number column only. Locomotives ordered new after the merger, and locomotives acquired from other railroads, follow in their own tables, with serial and order numbers where a count matches the span.

From the Coast Line

In the table, the ACL column is the Coast Line road number at the merger, and the SCL column is the number after it. Switchers that had been renumbered into the 10s, 20s, and 40s on the Coast Line took a new SCL series, except five NW2s that kept 21–25. The VO-1000s and the S2s had been re-engined with 1,200-horsepower Electro-Motive 567s. Three of the S2s, 44–46, were Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac engines acquired in May 1966. Four switchers, 717–720, and six F7As, 424–429, came from the Charleston & Western Carolina. GP7s 100–279, including former Charleston & Western Carolina units and five Columbia, Newberry & Laurens units that became SCL 875–879, are a long split. The number-by-number list stays on the Coast Line roster.

Cab units that had already left, including the E6As, have a blank SCL cell on that roster and are left blank here. E3A 500, wrecked at Fleming, Georgia, in 1953, had been rebuilt by Electro-Motive as E8Am 500 and became SCL 574. E7A 532, wrecked at Dillon, South Carolina, on February 4, 1953, had been rebuilt as E8A 532 and became SCL 575. The one SDP35, Coast Line 550 and later 1099, became SCL 600. E8A 550 is a different locomotive.

From the Seaboard

The Seaboard’s contribution is the larger hood fleet: GP7s 1700–1822, the GP9 groups whose SCL spans match on that roster, the Alco road switchers, and the late road power through the U30Bs and the GP40s of early 1967. GP9 blocks that the Seaboard roster does not match to an SCL span stay there. Four months after the merger, E7A 3041 and GP7s 1795 and 1796 were still lettered for the Seaboard at Athens. Renumbering took longer than the corporate date. E7A 568 is the Cary photograph on the company page, train 3 in the snow. GP40 1564 is the Boylan Junction photograph, crossing the Southern at Raleigh. GP7 914, in the 910–924 block, is the October 1977 Athens photograph.

New orders

The first locomotives ordered in the new name were sixteen U33Bs, 1719–1734, delivered from December 1967 through January 1968. They continued the number series past the inherited U30Bs, Coast Line 1700–1703 and Seaboard 1704–1718. Thirteen more U33Bs followed in January and February 1969. Both groups rode on Blomberg trucks from traded Electro-Motive units.

The U36B was the big General Electric purchase, 108 locomotives from May 1970 through March 1972, all on Blomberg trucks. The first 1776, serial 37439, built in August 1970, was later renumbered 1813 and is already inside 1748–1777. The Bicentennial 1776 in the Savannah photograph is a different locomotive, serial 37999, built in June 1971 on the same order as 1778–1812. It is preserved at the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society. The series then ran through 1855 in March 1972.

U18Bs, 105 locomotives, arrived from March 1973 through November 1974. The first blocks were 300–324. Nos. 325–343 and 344–392 rode on refurbished Blomberg trucks from Electro-Motive trade-ins. A dozen more, 250–261, were built in December 1973 on the same order as 325–343 and numbered below the 300s. Greg McDonnell, in U-Boats, assigns 390–392 to phosphate service in Florida.

Electro-Motive’s new four-motor hoods began with seventy GP40s, 1566–1635, from December 1969 through September 1971, added above the inherited GP40s that already filled 1500–1565. Twenty-one GP40-2s followed in April 1972, and five more, 6617–6621, in June 1980, in Family Lines paint. Louisville & Nashville GP40-2s 6600–6616 are the neighboring block. GP38-2s came in two paints. Nos. 500–555, fifty-six locomotives, were built in 1973 in the railroad’s own black and yellow. Nos. 6046–6050 and 6053–6065, eighteen locomotives, were built in 1980 in Family Lines paint. Nos. 6051–6052 are Georgia Railroad locomotives.

Six-motor power in the table below is a slice, not the whole 1968 SD45 delivery. SCL 2038–2044, serials 37728–37734, October 1968, later became Clinchfield 3625–3631. Further 1968 SD45s were numbered in the 2000s below 2038. Fifteen SD45-2s, 2045–2059, were built in August and September 1974. No. 2046 is the Hamlet photograph on the company page, the Pennyroyal coal train in April 1978. Thirty-six SD40-2s were built in 1979 and 1980 in Family Lines paint, including the single 8130. Clinchfield SD40-2s 8127–8129, 8131, and 8132 are the neighbors of that unit.

Yard power in the new orders is forty-five MP15ACs, twenty in October 1977 and twenty-five in February 1978. Louisville & Nashville MP15ACs are 4225–4234. The late General Electric road units are B23-7s, BQ23-7s 5130–5139, B30-7s, and C30-7s. B23-7s 5115–5129 are Louisville & Nashville, and the BQ23-7s sit between the Coast Line’s two B23-7 groups. C30-7s 7000–7015, 7032–7051, and 7062–7069 are Louisville & Nashville. From 1977 the new hoods left the builder in French gray with red and yellow ribbons.

Acquired locomotives

The Piedmont & Northern came in during 1969. Stockholders of both companies had approved that merger on February 13, 1968, subject to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Eighteen locomotives came with the property: six S4s, ten RS3s, and two C420s. RS3 1258, below, is one of the ten. Three Alco C430 demonstrators, built in March 1967 as 430-1, 430-2, and 430-3, carried SCL 1275–1277. Five switchers came from the Jacksonville Terminal and the Jacksonville Port Authority, the last of them built for the Atlanta & West Point. Two GP9s came from the Winston-Salem Southbound.

Rebuilds and slugs

Eight de-rated SD35 and SDP35 locomotives were numbered 1–8 for hump service. De-rated SD35 No. 1 is counted by historians as the first Family Lines diesel. That account is on the Clinchfield page.

After the steam generators came off, SDP35s 600–620 were renumbered 1950–1970. Those are the same twenty-one locomotives, Coast Line 600 and Seaboard 601–620.

Waycross rebuilt existing locomotives into GP16s. In Family Lines paint the longer blocks are 4606–4644, 4700–4801, and 4975–4977. No. 4802, rebuilt in October 1982, is the Seaboard System-paint transition, and that work was at Waycross. The GP16s are the same frames, already on the roster.

Yard slugs were numbered 3000–3010. S12 205 became 3009, and RS12 221 became 3010. General Electric MATE-4 road slugs 3200–3224, of August 1971, were paired with U36Bs. Former RS3s were also rebuilt as road slugs, including 3225–3227 and 3400–3404 in the Seaboard index above. Slugs are left out of both quantity columns.
