Origins and Purpose

Union Pacific has a deep and longstanding connection with the U.S. military dating back to the 19th century, when railroads played a crucial role in troop movement and logistics. Today, that relationship continues—both operationally and culturally—with a significant portion of the railroad’s workforce consisting of military veterans.

Locomotive No. 1943 was developed in collaboration with Union Pacific employees who are veterans, ensuring authenticity in both its message and design. The Name: A World War II Legacy

The number “1943” is not arbitrary—it directly references a powerful moment from World War II. That year, Union Pacific employees raised funds through war bonds to sponsor a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress named “Spirit of the Union Pacific.” The aircraft was assigned to the 571st Bomber Squadron but was tragically lost during a mission over Münster, Germany. By naming the locomotive after this aircraft, the railroad created a tangible link between its historic wartime contributions and modern recognition of military service.

Union Pacific officially unveiled No. 1943 in October 2017 in San Antonio, Texas, kicking off a nationwide “Salute to the Military” tour. During this campaign, the locomotive visited communities and military installations, including its first stop at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Unlike museum pieces or heritage steam locomotives, No. 1943 is fully integrated into daily operations. It regularly leads freight trains across Union Pacific’s network, ensuring its message reaches thousands of communities across the country.
