Few locomotives in modern railroading have carried the symbolic weight and national significance of Union Pacific No. 4141. Built as a tribute to George H. W. Bush, this striking diesel-electric locomotive stands as one of the most recognizable units in the Union Pacific Railroad heritage and commemorative fleet. Blending railroad tradition with presidential history, No. 4141 not only honored a lifelong rail enthusiast—it ultimately played a central role in one of the most historic funeral trains of the modern era. It was UP's first commemorative locomotive in the modern era recognizing a former president, and debuted years prior to the railroad's later locomotives in the series.
Union Pacific SD70ACe #4141, the "George H.W. Bush" or "George Bush 41", was photographed here by Warren Calloway in Kansas City on July 14, 2013.Union Pacific unveiled No. 4141 on October 18, 2005, at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, surprising the former president with a locomotive designed specifically in his honor.
The locomotive is an EMD SD70ACe, one of the most advanced freight locomotives of its era, but what truly set it apart was its unique paint scheme. Inspired by the presidential aircraft Air Force One, the unit features:
This marked only a rare departure from Union Pacific’s standard “Armour Yellow” livery, underscoring the importance of the tribute.
The number 4141 itself was carefully chosen—symbolizing Bush as the 41st President.
After its unveiling, No. 4141 entered Union Pacific’s active fleet, operating in regular freight service across the railroad’s vast network. However, its operational life was relatively brief. By 2007–2009, the locomotive was placed into storage during the economic downturn following the Great Recession.
For nearly a decade, the unit remained largely inactive—maintained in a serviceable condition but rarely used. This period of dormancy would later prove significant, as the locomotive was preserved for a far more meaningful purpose.
Following President Bush’s passing on November 30, 2018, Union Pacific made the historic decision to return No. 4141 to service.
On December 6, 2018, the locomotive led a 13-car funeral train carrying the former president from Spring to College Station, Texas—a distance of approximately 70 miles.
The journey drew thousands of mourners along the route, many standing trackside for hours to pay their respects. It marked:
The image of No. 4141 leading the procession instantly cemented the locomotive’s place in American history.
After the funeral, Union Pacific placed No. 4141 back into limited service, where it operated on select assignments and participated in a nationwide tour.
In 2019, the locomotive made its final operational appearance, running in conjunction with special events tied to Union Pacific’s steam program—including movements associated with the famed Big Boy No. 4014.
Later that year, Union Pacific formally donated the locomotive to the Bush Presidential Library.
Today, No. 4141 resides permanently at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, where it is housed in a dedicated pavilion alongside other presidential artifacts.
The exhibit, opened in 2024, allows visitors to experience the locomotive up close—preserving both:
Few modern locomotives have transitioned so seamlessly from industrial service to national monument.
