RJ Corman To Unveil 250th Anniversary C40-8Ws 1776 & 2026
Published: April 9, 2026
By: Adam Burns
RJ Corman has announced it will unveil a pair of specially painted C40-8Ws to honor America's 250th anniversary later this summer. According to the company:
"Numbered 1776 and 2026, the locomotives connect the nation’s founding with its present. Purchased from Wabtec Corporation and formerly owned by CSX, the units are receiving their new paint scheme as part of the delivery process before entering service.
Following delivery, the locomotives will operate in the Nashville market on R. J. Corman’s Nashville & Eastern Railroad (NERR). Unit 1776 is scheduled to arrive in July, followed by unit 2026 in September.
These locomotives recognize 250 years of American history while continuing the daily work that keeps American freight moving, supporting local industry and connecting communities across the nation."
About RJ Corman
The RJ Corman Railroad Group is one of the most respected and diversified short line railroad companies in North America. Known for its entrepreneurial spirit, rapid-response services, and commitment to regional economic development, the company has grown from a single rail line in Kentucky into a multifaceted transportation and logistics enterprise operating across numerous U.S. states.
Origins and Founder
The company was founded in 1973 by Richard Jay Corman, a visionary railroader whose career began at a young age. Born in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Corman developed an early passion for railroads and initially worked in track construction and maintenance. Recognizing the opportunities created by the decline of major Class I railroads and the subsequent abandonment of lightly used branch lines, he established a business focused on providing track maintenance services.
Corman’s first major railroad venture came in 1987 with the acquisition of the former Louisville & Nashville line between Lexington and Versailles, Kentucky. This operation became the Lexington & Versailles Railroad, marking the beginning of RJ Corman’s expansion into short line ownership and operations.
Expansion of Railroad Operations
Following the success of its first line, the RJ Corman Railroad Group steadily expanded throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries. By acquiring or leasing former branch lines from major railroads, the company preserved vital transportation links for rural and industrial communities.
Today, the RJ Corman Railroad Group operates numerous short line railroads across several states, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. These lines collectively serve hundreds of customers and connect with major Class I railroads such as CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific, ensuring seamless integration into the national rail network.
Key RJ Corman railroads include:
Lexington & Versailles Railroad (Kentucky)
Memphis Line (Tennessee and Mississippi)
Pennsylvania Lines
Ohio Valley Line (Ohio and West Virginia)
West Virginia Line
Texan Lines
Central Kentucky Lines
Through these operations, RJ Corman provides essential freight services, including the transportation of aggregates, chemicals, grain, forest products, metals, plastics, and energy-related commodities.
Diversified Services
What distinguishes the RJ Corman Railroad Group from many other short line operators is its extensive diversification beyond traditional rail operations. The company offers a comprehensive suite of services that support the broader rail and transportation industries.
1. Railroad Operations
The core of the company’s business is its short line railroad network. RJ Corman emphasizes customer-focused service, flexible logistics solutions, and close partnerships with local industries. This approach has enabled the company to sustain rail service on lines that might otherwise have been abandoned.
2. Emergency Response Services
One of the company’s most recognized divisions is RJ Corman Emergency Services, which provides rapid response to derailments and other rail-related incidents throughout North America. Equipped with specialized machinery and highly trained personnel, the division operates 24/7 and is frequently called upon by Class I railroads and government agencies.
3. Track Construction and Maintenance
The company’s roots in track work remain a vital component of its operations. RJ Corman’s construction division undertakes track installation, rehabilitation, bridge construction, and maintenance projects for railroads and industrial clients. These services have contributed significantly to the modernization and reliability of rail infrastructure across the United States.
4. Switching and Industrial Services
RJ Corman also provides switching services within industrial facilities, ports, and transload terminals. By managing on-site rail logistics, the company helps customers streamline operations and reduce transportation costs.
5. Logistics and Transloading
To complement its rail services, the company operates transload facilities that facilitate the transfer of goods between rail and truck. These facilities expand market access for customers who do not have direct rail connections.
Commitment to Safety and Innovation
Safety has long been a cornerstone of RJ Corman’s corporate philosophy. The company invests heavily in employee training, advanced equipment, and rigorous safety protocols. Its emergency response division, in particular, has earned a reputation for professionalism and efficiency, often playing a critical role in restoring rail service following major incidents.
Innovation is also central to the company’s success. By adopting modern technologies and maintaining a customer-centric approach, RJ Corman has been able to adapt to changing market conditions while preserving the personalized service characteristic of short line railroads.
Economic and Community Impact
The RJ Corman Railroad Group plays a significant role in supporting regional economies. By maintaining rail service on secondary lines, the company enables industries to access cost-effective transportation, thereby promoting job creation and economic development. Many communities that might have lost rail access have instead experienced renewed growth due to RJ Corman’s investment.
In addition to its economic contributions, the company is deeply involved in community initiatives, particularly in its home state of Kentucky. Philanthropic efforts and local engagement reflect the founder’s belief in giving back to the communities served by the railroad.
Leadership and Legacy
Following the passing of Richard Jay Corman in 2013, leadership of the company transitioned to his family, ensuring continuity of the founder’s vision and values. Today, the RJ Corman Railroad Group remains a privately held, family-operated enterprise headquartered in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
From humble beginnings as a track maintenance business to its current status as a leading short line railroad and transportation services provider, the RJ Corman Railroad Group exemplifies entrepreneurial vision and operational excellence. Through strategic acquisitions, diversified services, and a steadfast commitment to safety and customer service, the company has preserved essential rail infrastructure and strengthened regional economies across the United States.
As the North American rail industry continues to evolve, RJ Corman’s adaptability and dedication to innovation position it to remain a vital force in short line railroading for years to come.
